About this ebook

Someone wanted to send a message—but was it intended for Celeste or for Stephen?

There are plenty of suspects, but no real clues as to who set Celeste's car on fire. Stephen wants her safe at his house, and despite her reservations that's where she finds herself. Will his family stand by while she moves into his place? Even as she tries to settle in, the past insists on coming back to haunt them both. Alan won't stay away, and with him he carries the shadows of her old life which she had thought safely buried. At the same time, Stephen's secrets are beginning to leak out as well, even though he seems determined to hold onto them.

Tricia was here in Houston. Stephen had seen her again without telling me.

Stephen is going to find out who was responsible for torching Celeste's car and make sure they never threaten her again. First, though, he has to make sure she's safe, and to do that he's going to keep her at his place where he never has to let her out of his sight. Then he somehow has to convince his family that Celeste isn't after his bank accounts, while at the same time dealing with his former fiancée's blackmail attempts. As if things aren't complicated enough, he still hasn't told Celeste about Patricia. He had to be careful—that  whole situation is a ticking time bomb just waiting to blow up in his face.

Both Celeste's future and my own rested on me not making any more stupid mistakes.

About the Author

Winter’s Chill

STEPHEN’S VOICE WAS TERSE as he rounded on Celeste. Go get Molly and anything you need to spend the next couple of nights away from home, he ordered.

Even though she was still reeling from the shock of what she’d seen, some part of her knew that he was right so she obeyed him without question. As she raced through her apartment tossing things into an overnight bag, her mind replayed the scene over and over—angry yellow flames devouring her car while thick clouds of gray smoke rose into the night sky. In the distance she heard sirens. Someone had called 9-1-1 already. The fire department would be there quickly, no strangers to emergency calls in her run-down neighborhood.

Molly had sensed something was up, and as soon as she saw Celeste pull the pet carrier out of the hall closet, she bolted for the bedroom. To her, the carrier meant a trip to the vet and all the gross personal outrages that entailed. Celeste had to fish her out from under the bed, and the cat stared back with accusing eyes as she was unceremoniously pushed inside the carrier and the door latched behind her. The poor thing didn’t understand what was going on and that she wasn’t going to be tortured at the vet’s office, but her ruffled dignity was a small price to pay to have her safe.

When Celeste got back to the living room, Stephen took Molly’s carrier and led the way outside. As soon as the front door was locked, they clattered down the stairs and he chivvied her around the blazing wreck towards his car. The glossy red paint flickered angrily with reflections of the dazzling flames, and a lump rose in Celeste’s throat as she slid into the passenger seat. She’d bought that car her junior year of high school after working her butt off for almost a year to pay for it. It was well past its prime, and despite the care she took it wasn’t in particularly good shape anymore. Still, it was hers, and they’d been through a lot together. Now it was gone, and Celeste didn’t know why.

She just knew it had been deliberate.

* * *

Rage threatened to consume him the way the flames consumed Celeste’s car. Stephen’s jaws were clenched so tightly together that he could only bite out monosyllables, and his eyes darted from side to side as he kept watch for potential threats. He’d never been so furious in his life. His white-knuckled grip on the handle of Molly’s pet carrier would have been like nothing if he could have gotten his hands on the neck of whoever had done this.

Someone had torched Celeste’s car, whether to scare her or hurt her he had no idea. It didn’t matter. It was an attack on his girlfriend, and there was no way in hell he was letting that slide. He was going to find out who the fuck was responsible and make sure that they never, ever did anything to threaten her again.

He got Celeste and Molly into his car and sped off. Maybe they should have waited for the police to get there, but he needed to get her out of that exposed apartment complex to somewhere he could guarantee her safety. That was more important than a car or a stack of reports that would most likely get filed away and forgotten by next week. He intended to make some calls first thing in the morning, though. All those donations to the police retirement fund ought to at least get his calls kicked up
