    HOMELESS

In two days I will be homeless. It wasn’t something that I was planning on and nor was it something I had hoped for, but the money I had saved away was not enough to deal with the wonderful surprise that the sub-prime housing bubble of 2005 brought upon me and my now ex-husband. I take a look around my home - all that is left after a messy divorce that was finalized 6 months ago - and wish it good luck.

I pick up the last box of clothes to be loaded into my recently purchased secondhand Japanese made Turveno mini-van and lug it down the hallway that is now barren of furniture - all having been sold off at a yard sale last week - and dump the box by the front door to pull out my house key one last time and lock the door of what is now no longer my home.

The key goes in the mailbox next to the door and I stroll over to my waiting white cream colored mini-van with its sparkly tires and Wendy’s Deliveries printed on the side in black outlined blue. When I sit down in the front seat, I stare at the small, humble home in mid-Hyde Park that has been my abode for three years now. It was a steal on the market when I bought it due to the elderly owner having just passed away and their family didn’t have time to manage a home in Chicago when they lived across the country in New York. Unfortunately, my job as a banker at JX Hardling-Wilderson was the first to go as the financial crisis came about. My husband’s job as a prep chef at the Gobbling Goblin Fast Food Restaurant survived the crash, but the income from his job barely covered the mortgage payments. It was a swift decline to arguments, semi-physical fights and name calling from there that later led to the man cheating on me with the ugliest waitress of the batch at the restaurant he was working at and that’s how I found myself divorced and the owner of this Turveno mini-van: My new abode for the foreseeable future.

I turn the key in the ignition, look in my rear mirror at the boxes stacked high and then slowly back out with the loud ‘gring, gring, gring’ of the reverse sirens clanging in my ears.

The road to that runs down Lake Michigan is the one that I find myself on. I’m looking for a sneaky spot to park my van for the night and one appears fairly quickly.

The van slides in between the two sets of well cropped trees next to a large tower of some kind and I climb in the back to lie down on the single mattress that sits among the fortress of boxes that surround it and sigh deeply. This was not what I had in mind for my life at the tender age of 32.

Out comes my phone and I settle down to flick through my messages. Wendy’s Deliveries is an uncomplicated business. I sell electronics shipped in from Korea with same day delivery within the city of Chicago. You would think that with big companies like Big River and Objective doing the online business model to a tee that there would be no room in the market for a small player. Surprisingly there is and I’m busier than ever.

Thoughts of my office downtown sift through my mind. It would be wonderful if I could stay there, but the landlord says no resident habitation is allowed and I don’t have the guts to ask one of my 5 part time employees for a place to stay. Hence, here I am in the Turveno.

My finger finally comes to a rest over the dating app that I knew I would eventually seek out. When I was 20, I would never have thought that I would use something like sex to ease the sting of my life issues given I come from a happy home and have had a most normal sex life up to now, but apparently I’m not immune to the pull of glutinous sexual need when I still have thoughts of that fat harlot doing the dirty with my ex-husband in some random hotel stuck in my mind.

I inhale and then click the app icon. Immediately I get what sounds like 300 small gong sounds before the notifications and messages tab comes to a still silence with only a red counter there to tell anyone that I am in serious demand.

Click after click reveals praise, nudity and graphic sexual messages to my eyes. I read them all and sometimes twice. The feeling of being wanted in this way is like the worst drug anyone could have provided me. My husband was mediocre at best at making me desired. These men from the internet make me
