10 Steps Towards Healing, Reconciliation & Transformation - Tabitha Mwai
Foreword
CONGRATULATIONS, YOU are going to be a mother!
This is a statement that a majority of women yearn to hear at a particular time of their lives; a time they consider perfect for motherhood. The yearning even goes ahead to become a mental picture of the pregnancy journey and motherhood. This is well demonstrated by little girls and their love for dolls. Have you seen how they carry the dolls everywhere, treat them with love and compassion and even have conversations with them? There is no doubt that the picture of being a mother stays with women for a long time.
When the actual news comes, the common reaction is the feeling of warmth, love, excitement, and joy. There is even an assumption that once you become pregnant the maternal instincts kick in due to the biological wiring. But here is the flip side, everyone receives the news at different points in their lives. This means you are impacted differently be it mentally, emotionally, financially or physically. It is not always that you will get the news when you are prepared.
Having unplanned pregnancies is not a bad thing. I always make a joke that most firstborns’ and to some extent last borns’ were unplanned for. The challenge comes in when you are not in the right state either emotionally, mentally, physically or financially. In such instances, the last thing you would want to hear is, congratulations, you are a mother.
Women have the most sacred gift of bringing life into this world. You will not always experience it at the perfect time or conditions, but it is still a gift to the world.
The good book says, The blessing of the LORD, it maketh rich, and he addeth no sorrow with it (Proverbs 10:22 KJV). But a child may at some moment feel like a burden or obstacle in your life. Maternal instincts might not kick in as expected and even when they do, they may not be enough to bear, nurture and raise a child.
Motherhood is a journey that comes with emotional, mental, physical and financial changes. Without being in the right state, environment or having a support system, the process can be devastating and emotionally draining.
However, this does not mean that all hope is lost. For many generations, women have managed to bear children with no resources and support systems, and this is their greatest strength.
I had a rocky start as a young mother which took me through phases of confusion, pain, anger, regret, despair, rejection and depression before I was able to enjoy the blessing of my womb. Everything seemed to be changing all at once and nothing seemed to be making sense. Having just graduated from university, I was still in the process of finding the right career footing and my relationship was literally on the rocks. It felt like my life had just started and soon after brought
