Amelie Gets a Little Sister - Eva Markert
Waiting for the Little Sister
Good night, sweet dreams,
says Amos’s mum.
But today, neither Amos nor Amelie can fall asleep. The reason is that Amelie is staying with her cousin Amos, because her mum is in hospital having a baby. Amelie is frightfully excited about it, and so is Amos.
I am really looking forward to my little sister,
Amelie exclaims for at least the hundredth time today.
A little brother would be better,
Amos says, likewise for the hundredth time.
Nah! I think boys are dumb!
Amelie responds.
I am not dumb!
Amos shouts indignantly.
But I never said that you’re dumb, dumbo!
Amelie yells back.
You said boys are dumb, and I’m a boy.
Keep it down!
Amos’s mum warns them from the living room.
Amelie said I’m dumb!
Amos shouts back.
I did not!
Amelie shouts.
Amos’s mum comes back again. You two really must sleep now!
she says. Especially Amelie. The coming days are going to be exciting.
Aunt Susan, when will the baby finally arrive?
Amelie wants to know. Mum has already been in hospital since this noon.
I don’t know exactly, but I’ll be sure to tell you right away when I hear something.
Will you wake me up if I’m sleeping?
Aunt Susan promises to do so.
Amelie lies down on her back and waits. Amos waits with her.
The phone rings. Both immediately sit straight up in bed. They hear Amos’s mum speaking, but they are unable to understand what she is saying. After she hangs up, they wait impatiently for her to come into their room.
But she does not come.
Amelie can’t stand it any longer. She races into the living room. Amos follows.
Aunt Susan, who was that just now on the phone?
she inquires.
Just Mr Baldwin,
she replies. Go back to bed.
Both do as she says.
I’m definitely going to be awake all night,
Amelie says.
Me too,
Amos says.
And yet, he falls asleep shortly thereafter.
Amelie continues waiting alone, and keeps waiting and waiting ...
Amelie!
Aunt Susan softly shakes her shoulder.
Amelie starts.
Your dad just called.
She didn’t hear a telephone. Did she fall asleep?
Your little sister has arrived! Your mum and the baby are doing fine.
Aunt Susan laughs with joy. Amelie flings her arms around her neck.
Amos wakes up also. Whassup?
he mumbles.
My little sister has arrived!
Amelie jumps up and gives him a big hug, too.
When can I see her?
she inquires of Aunt Susan.
You’ll need to sleep two more nights.
With us!
Amos adds.
Exactly. Then your mum will be coming home with your little sister.
Following this, Aunt Susan makes hot cocoa for all to help them fall asleep more easily.
The cocoa helps. Amelie and Amos soon grow sleepy.
Two more nights,
Amelie yawns. That is sooo long yet.
Sleeping over with us for two nights isn’t much,
Amos says. He
