Marie's Secret Friend - Eva Markert

    A Strange Girl

    Marie often did strange things.

When she was on the playground, she would run non-stop between the slide and the swings, alternately sliding and swinging.

Can’t you make up your mind what you’d you like to do? Mum asked with a laugh." ‘

Of course I can! Marie answered and ran off again.

Mum watched her, shaking her head.

Hey, Marie, Sarah shouted, do you want to go on the seesaw with me? Sarah was in the same class as her.

Marie stopped and listened to something inside her. Nah, she doesn’t want to go on the seesaw, she said.

Who doesn’t? Sarah wanted to know, stunned.

But Marie was already on her way to the slide again.

    Sometimes Marie talked to herself.

The other day in the middle of an arithmetic class she said loud and clear into the silence: Oh yes, that’s a good idea.

Everyone looked at her in astonishment.

What’s a good idea? Mr. Winehouse asked.

Marie jumped and blushed I...uh...I... she stuttered.

Mr Winehouse smiled. I’m sure you think it’s a good idea to learn to count. Am I right?

    Marie nodded in relief.

Some of the class were muttering.

Do you really think so? Sarah whispered to her.

Marie nodded, grinned and leant back over her notebook.

Strangely enough Marie also liked going to bed in the evenings. Her brother Steven who was two years older than her, always begged to be allowed to stay up later. Marie never did that.
