Welcome
‘I bought a wand and some glitter’
Every parent who’s ever had to wean a child off dummies will empathise with one of our Warm Fuzzies on pageteam were very fond of theirs. Amber W shocked us all when she said that as a toddler, she chewed one so hard that she actually a piece of rubber. Much to her mum Ann’s horror! Not surprisingly, Ann threw Amber’s dummies away, making her go cold turkey. ‘Of course I don’t remember any of it,’ laughed Amber. ‘But I’m happy to report that I obviously got over what must have been pretty traumatic at the time. Discarded dummies have never appeared in a single nightmare!’ Lisa’s daughter Ava was also very fond of hers, although limited her appreciation to just sucking them. When it was time to give them up, Lisa came up with a novel solution. ‘I told her we’d give them all to the dummy fairy, who would deliver them to children who didn’t have any. ‘Luckily, Ava bought it,’ said Lisa, who then followed through with the ruse. ‘I bought a sparkly wand and a box of glitter, so that when she woke up, the table where we’d carefully placed her dummies was replaced by a left-behind wand and a trail of fairy dust. Of course, we spent the next week brushing glitter off our clothes and furniture!’ Lisa laughed. Although I wasn’t into dummies, I used to suck my two big fingers. To stop me, my dad used to come in at night and gently fold my arms. It’s something I still do if I sleep on my side – all these years later!
