Mia and Alice and the book of Spirits - Mia Penyalow

    Chapter 1 – Emma’s orphanage

It all started on a cold windy day in an orphanage.

There were two girls: one is Alice and one is Mia. Mia had dark brown hair and Alice had blonde hair.

They loved playing tricks and fooling Emma.

Emma looks after the kids in the orphanage.

She was very mean to the children.

If you don’t do your chores, you won’t have food for three days and if you try to escape you will easily be caught and be put in the shed, which is dark with rats and spiders she used to say.

Mia an Alice wished they had a home.

Mia will we ever find a home? asked Alice sniffing.

We will. Let’s not lose hope, Mia said, hugging Alice.

Hey, I know what will cheer you up. Let’s play a trick on Emma, said Mia holding a fake spider.

Where did you get that? asked Alice.

    Somewhere… Mia responded cheekily.

The girls were tiptoeing, all the way downstairs.

    There she is, Mia whispered.

    I’m scared. said Alice.

Shhh, shhh - she will hear us. Mia hissed.

    Sorry, Alice sighed.

Ok, so on the count of three we put the spider on her head and run to bed, Mia said.

    One, two.

    No!

Alice dropped the spider on Emma and that gave her a big fright.

Aaa!! A spider, a spider! She screamed and then she realized it wasn’t a real spider.

Mia and Alice quietly tiptoed back to their room until they heard a big shout.

Mia and Alice, come here right now.

    She was furious.

This is not going to be good . Alice whispered to Mia.

It’s all your fault we’re in this mess in the first place. Mia said crossly. Come here quickly or else. Emma said. It was not my fault. Alice argued.

Mia rolled her eyes at her and said. That’s why it’s good to listen to me.

Why can’t you listen to me for once? Alice complained.

Correction, I listen to you once and we got into trouble, real bad. Mia said while walking with Emma.

Well girls, that was very, very irresponsible of you. I am very disappointed and cross. You may think it was funny, but I certainly did not think so. As a punishment you two have to clean the stairs from bottom to top till the morning Emma said angrily. Her face was red, and her hair became frizzy.

Please no, that will take forever, anything but that Alice begged.

You have a choice, you can either clean the stairs or not eat food for three days. She said. Ok we will clean the stairs. Alice said quickly.

Thought so, you have all night to clean the stairs from bottom to top. I hope they look shinny and clean in the morning. She said yarning and walking to bed.

We better get started before the devil comes back. Mia smiled at Alice. The devil? Alice said confused.

Emma is a bit of a devil. Mia said. That’s true, she is horrible she gives me the shivers. Alice said. They both walked to the tap and filled up the bucket with water.

They got out their sponges and started scrubbing. It’s a long way up. Alice looked up surprised. The quicker we do it the better. Mia said scrubbing. They both scrubbed all night long.

It was the next morning and the girls finished in time. That was tiring. Mia sighed. I’m so hungry. Alice heard her tummy rumble. At least we did it. Emma walked and saw the shimmering clean stairs. Wow these stairs are so clean. She said happily. Are you both satisfied? Mia and Alice rolled their eyes at her. I am proud of you girls, but you still need to do your chores like mop the floor, wash the windows, make your bed and one of you need to feed the chickens, they are hungry. Emma continued.

Mia and Alice started mopping the floor until they smelled bacon and eggs sizzling on the frying pan.

Do you smell that? Said Mia sniffing the air. Oh, yes it smells so good! Alice said drooling.

They peeked through the door and saw Emma eating her delicious meal. I wish we could eat that. Alice frowned. We have to wait till dinner to eat and don’t get too excited, because we have Brussels sprouts for dinner. Said Mia.

I hate those things, eww. Said Mia. Me too. Said Alice. After they finished most of their choirs it was time for someone to feed the chickens. Let’s do rock paper scissors shoot. They both played.

I win scissors cut paper ha-ha, you have to go to the chicken poo dumpster! Alice laughed.

Not funny, anyway you need to clean the windows and it takes a long time. Mia smiled back at her.

Well, um it’s peaceful and I don’t need to step or smell the disgusting poo. Alice said.

Mia grabbed a bucket of leftover food.

It looked delicious even if it was cold. There were vegetables, eggs and bacon.

Mia looked around to see if anyone saw her and then grabbed a hand and popped it in her mouth hungrily.

Alice, come here now, I need to show you something. Mia called to Alice.

What? Alice walked to the chicken coop. Look at the food in the bucket. We can eat some of it. Mia said. Wouldn’t the chickens get angry? Alice asked. No, it will be fine. Anyway, they get food every day". Mia replied.

True. Alice started grabbing some and eating it.

After they finished, they started making their beds. They went to bed. Mia, look what’s under the bed. Alice said. We never really have time to see what’s under our beds. Alice said.

Look! Our toys. Mia grabbed a Witch plushy for Alice and a fox pushy. There’s a book. Alice got the book and showed it to Mia.

Can you please read it to me? Alice looked at her and begged. Ok . Mia read the book to her.

    The girl who had powers

There was a girl who was different to the children at school. She always makes things easy for her. So, when she gets bullied, she makes them stop.

    Mia read the book until
