A MOTHER’S LOVE

How about we go skating this weekend?’ Kate suggested.

Emily rolled her eyes. ‘I’m going to my room.’

Kate sank onto a chair and rested her head on her hands at the kitchen table. She wished she could find a way of bringing back her stepdaughter’s lovely smile.

On Saturday, despite Emily’s protests, Kate insisted they went to the ice rink,

KATE BLINKED AWAY STINGING TEARS

Pulling on her skates, she recognised the song blaring out of the speakers as one of Emily’s favourites. She hoped it was a good sign.

She was delighted when Emily skated off and performed a twirl. She’d loved skating with her dad. Maybe this would bring back her sparkle.

As she clung onto the barrier, Kate admired Emily’s skill. While Emily was a natural, Kate was terrified, knowing that, as soon as she let go, she’d fall.

Everyone sped past her, apart from another woman who also clutched onto the barrier.
