You think you might want to do some work? Ruby, the office manager said, looking over at Kitty, her twenty-year-old stepdaughter who didn’t say anything, staring out of the window to the parking lot. 

Get away from that window. Those boys over there got you in trouble in the first place, Ruby said walking through the cluttered motorcycle shop’s office and slumping into her chair.

Since her maternity leave ended, Ruby has been on edge with everyone at the bike shop. She was grateful, her husband Mac let her work and didn’t leave her home with their infant Jay and daughter, Goldie.

That stack of invoices over there, Gracie. Please hand them to me, Ruby said. Those needs to be filed away by the end of the day.
