The Break-In

Lieutenant Beckford, are you receiving? The radio in his car crackled into life as Clint slid his 6ft frame back into the driver’s seat. His broad shoulders settled back against the leather upholstery of his squad car as he instinctively balanced his fresh coffee on the center console.

I'm here command, He replied, What's up? He took a sip of his black coffee, wincing as the burning liquid danced across his tongue, the sweetness of 3 sugars contrasting perfectly with the bitterness of the coffee. We've got a potential robbery in progress, the voice on the radio continued, identifying a house just two blocks from his current location.

Clint sighed; he had a feeling his coffee was going to go cold again. Ron! He shouted to his partner, who was still busy stocking up on donuts, We've gotta move, robbery in progress.

Ron was a big bloke, perhaps 220 pounds with a stomach nursed by years of snacking on donuts. But, he was still quick when he needed to be, clutching his fresh donuts he threw himself in the car as Clint flicked the sirens on, accelerating away from the sidewalk. The coffee shifted as well, Clint just catching it and easing it into the designated cup holder.

It took less than 3 minutes for the two of them to get to South street. It was once an affluent neighborhood but had become less popular in recent years. Most of the buildings on each side of the tree-lined avenue needed a fresh coat of paint, the vehicles parked on the roadside and in driveways were run-of-the-mill. This was a place where normal people lived, not those who had fortunes to spare. The houses were arranged in pairs, attached, most with driveways to the front and short paths going round to the back.

He pulled up outside number 14 and glanced at Ron, Ready? Ron simply nodded; after 5 years working together, words were not always necessary.
