    Chapter One

Maybe I shouldn’t have thrown my phone to the other side of the rental car. After too many incorrect map suggestions through the back roads of Louisiana, it’s better off over there where it can do no further harm.

The flickering white glow illuminated the floor as I drove through the twilight bayou. I squinted to ignore the glow in my peripheral vision but failed. I knocked a fast-food bag over the phone. My vision adjusted to the darkening twilight as I glanced toward the swamps on both sides of the highway.

Perhaps the smart thing would have been to pull off onto the road and shut it off, but it was approaching evening. I wasn’t sure if gators were out and about ready to eat an unsuspecting tourist.

Next trip, you’re flying, Crystal, I whispered. I don’t care how small those airline seats are.

I pursed my lips. That would cut down on driving and I’d have more time for the seafood festival in Pensacola. Yeah, it’s a food festival. I didn’t go there just for food.

I’m a Texas girl so there’s never a lack of good cooking. The nearest beach is over a hundred miles away from my hometown. If I’m visiting
