Chapter One
Dusty was barefoot as usual. She left grimy footprints on the gleaming marble floor, as well as a trail of blood, dribbling from the neck of a recently decapitated turkey hanging from her belt. She stood in the center of the ballroom, under a grand chandelier, and stared around her in bemusement rather than awe. Servants hung thick emerald velvet and creamy satin ribbons on the walls. Bunches of clover, chrysanthemums, and baby’s breath were fixed to unlit candle sconces.
Olivia Sylvo, aunt of the bride-to-be and acting alpha female of the pack, hastened across the room to Dusty. The slinky fabric of the older woman’s peach day dress rasped with her urgent strides. The sharp points of Olivia’s heels clapped against the floor, and Dusty wondered that the tiny chisels didn’t chip the marble. The long rope of pearls, draped thrice around Olivia’s neck, clicked like the chittering teeth of a dozen rodents.
How can she stand to make so much noise as she walks? Dusty wondered. And what is that awful smell?
Olivia reeked of floral perfume, which masked the scent of her wolf and stung Dusty’s sensitive nose. When Olivia was only a few feet away, Dusty held her breath. This was only the second time she’d met the alpha female, and the last time had been five years ago, when she’d petitioned to join the pack.
What do you think you’re doing here?
Olivia huffed.
Since Dusty’s presence had been requested, she didn’t know how to answer. Based on Olivia’s austere glower, Dusty expected to be chased off, like a fox caught in a henhouse.
Leave and come back through the servants’ entrance,
Olivia hissed. She didn’t wait for Dusty to acknowledge the command. Olivia spun around so quickly Dusty supposed that the spiked footwear had purpose after all.
Dusty exhaled the breath she’d been holding. What’s the point of going around to the side door when I’m already here? She answered her own unspoken question: Olivia had to put the lowly, dirty she-wolf in her place.
Get this floor cleaned up.
Olivia snapped her fingers at two servants, who scowled at Dusty for giving them extra work.
Dusty retreated, her mud-caked cargo pants shedding chunks of dirt like scales. Once she was outside, a servant slammed the door behind her. Dusty stared out at the Appalachian woods and seriously considered walking away from the mansion.
She couldn’t fathom the reason for her summons in the first place. Hunting and tracking were about the only things Dusty was good for, and she didn’t think they wanted fresh venison or boar for the wedding feast. Aromas of beef and seafood, clogged with spices, wafted from the Sylvos’ kitchens.
Barely tolerated by the Pennsylvania pack as it was, Dusty knew if she up and left without seeing what Olivia wanted, the alpha female would have her kicked out. Snarling under her breath, Dusty went around to the side door. Besides, she was curious as to what the substitute werewolf queen wanted.
Dusty reentered the mansion, and a cowed servant waited for her. The diminutive werewolf directed Dusty to Antonia Sylvo’s bedroom. Dusty had never met the daughter of the pack alpha, the bride-to-be, but people had remarked how similar Dusty and Antonia’s wolf forms were. No doubt the werewolf princess appreciated being compared to the lowest ranking she-wolf in the pack.
Outside the double doors of the bedroom, Dusty could smell Olivia’s perfume as well as a sweeter but no less obnoxious scent
