A UNIVERSE WITH HER LOST LOVE

    CHAPTER 1

I pushed my hand against the glowing side panel and entered the circular blue-green lit laboratory. The floating globe in the center of three circular pathways pulsed with soft green and blue lights.

I smiled at the overhead sign in black letters – No Mental Inquiries Unless Authorized. Someone added a yellow sheet of paper underneath – Think Happy Thoughts.

Uh, there’s a nasty image. What if someone visualized something horrific?

We had different names for the glowing globe in the center. Some called it the water drop, while the Brass named it ‘The Asset.’ A few of our younger members liked Star Gate.

I called it the portal. That’s what it was and the most logical name. A star gate was close to its function but not like the television show. As far as we knew, it didn’t allow travel away from Earth, but it went to other planets.

Each planet was Earth, but not ours. We took long enough to figure it out. The first probes found themselves outside where the air was different or filled with unrecognizable pathogens. Eventually, we picked up radio broadcasts about presidents never elected and nonexistent sport teams. A few were in languages nobody on this earth understood.

    Roads not taken, I mumbled.

I heard the familiar cough of Patricia from behind. She leaned forward with a slim and athletic body, so unlike my own. She brushed the long blonde hair from her eyes, while she stared at the globe.

Five years ago, I would have hated her. I’m not that immature ‘kid’ anymore that worried about her weight.

She raised an eyebrow. Thinking of throwing your choice in Marie? Kinda ‘wordy’ if you ask me. She licked her lips and smiled. I’m thinking about… The Alter-Gate. Get it? Alter…nate? Alter…gate?

About as good a choice as any and no copyright violation.

She smiled back and then finished her calculations as she swiped on the tablet. It beeped, and she nodded in satisfaction.

She set the tablet on top of the computer wider than most people’s desks. Thanks to the portal, we had a computer a century ahead of current tech. The soft glow from several red and green lights glowed against her skin as she thought.

Just think, thirty years ago, most people couldn’t conceive of the Internet or predict its effect on our lives. She gestured toward the orb. Now I can’t imagine a world without it.

She whistled low. This thing could give us answers to every question we can ask. The math says there is an unlimited number of universes out there. Unlimited inquiries and an infinity of answers.

Her eyes widened. "Imagine! Solutions to the energy crisis, or working models for inventions never made, or copies of cancelled shows. Wouldn’t you like to watch season four of Star Trek?"

I smiled back. "Nice to see somebody has their priorities in order."

She nudged her elbow against my shoulders. The difference wasn’t lost on me – hard and toned muscles verses my soft body.

Hey, some want advanced tech. Others alternate history books or the guy who got away. Me? Give me my stories. I’m a girl with simple priorities.

    I blinked. Guy?

"Yeah. Haven’t you ever wondered what it would be like
