Chapter 1

Rachel

When my ex-boyfriend, Rob, showed up at my apartment, I never expected that he would try to harm me. We had dated for a little more than three months last year. Nothing in his behavior indicated that he was capable of forcing himself on someone.

The tone of his voice on the phone a few weeks ago concerned me. To be honest, I didn’t think much about that when he showed up at my door. He greeted me like the Rob that I had known. He wanted to apologize for getting upset. I quickly realized that was just so he could get in my apartment. I was terrified about what he might to do me.

I believed that Rob had every intention of forcing me to have sex with him. I had no idea what he would do to me after that. Megan, my best friend and roommate, arrived a few minutes after Rob. She was now trying to remove the security chain from the door.

Rob had covered my mouth with his hand so that I couldn’t scream. Rob’s other hand was like a vice grip on my arm. I tried to break free, but Rob was too strong for me. He was forcing me down the hallway toward my bedroom.

Rachel, are you okay, called Megan from the hallway. I could hear her struggling to remove the security chain to open the door all the way. Why is the door chained?! Rachel!

I struggled harder to break free, but Rob tightened his grip. Tears were freely flowing from my eyes.

I told you to stop struggling, said Rob as he shoved me toward my bedroom.

I’ve called the police, yelled Megan from the hallway. They will be here any minute.

Megan, what is going on? I heard Justin’s voice from the hallway.

The door’s chained. Something’s wrong, Megan answered.

I heard a forceful kick against the door and the security chain tear from the wall. The door crashed open. Rob quickly turned his head toward the noise and then he shoved me into my bedroom. He started to push the door shut with the heel of his right foot when it swung in and knocked us both to the floor.

I looked up and Justin came rushing into the room and pinned Rob to the floor. He grabbed both his arms so he could not move.

Are you okay? asked Justin.

I think so, I answered through my tears.

Did he hurt you in any way? Justin asked as he pressed down hard on Rob.

Not really. He didn’t get the chance to do anything other than grab me and cover my mouth, I replied as I sat up.

He put his hands on you. That’s too much, replied Justin.

Justin pressed his knee hard into Rob’s back. Rob let out a groan. Other than that, Rob made no noise and did not move. Justin had him securely pinned to the floor.

Megan rushed into my room.

The police are on their way, she said. She helped me up off the floor.

What happened? Are you okay? Megan looked down at Rob pinned to the floor underneath Justin.

Is that Rob?

I nodded. Megan helped me over to the bed. We both sat.

Do you have handcuffs? asked Justin.

Megan gave Justin a look. I was still too stunned to react.

What kind of stuff do you think Rachel is into? Megan asked Justin.

Just would be helpful so I don’t have to hold this scumbag much longer.

No. Sorry. No handcuffs, I finally said.

Hello, we heard someone call from the living room. Someone call the police?

Megan got up off my bed and went into the hallway.
