Chapter 1
JES
ONCE UPON A TIME…or was it twice upon a time? I’m not sure. Oh well. Some time ago there was a boy. Not just any boy. This was a very good boy. Very intelligent. Very, very cute, and very, very playful. Very talented, too. His parents had a hard time naming him because they liked three names and couldn’t decide between them. They liked the names Joel, Ethan, and Seth. So, since they couldn’t decide, they used the first letter of each name and called him Jes. Very simple. Jes.
But this story isn’t just about the boy named Jes. This story is also about a pig. A pig?
you ask. Yes, a pig. Not just any pig. This was a very good pig. Very intelligent. Very, very cute and very, very playful. Very talented, too. I’m not going to tell you his name just yet. But I will tell you some of the things this pig could do.
For starters, this pig could sing. And talk. And fly. Yes, I said fly.
Actually, this pig had all the makings of a superhero. He even had a cape.
Now, with all these assets, you would think his name would be something like Super Pig. Or Porkman. Or even The Baconator. But no, his name was nothing like that.
Have you ever heard the old saying, A rose by any other name would smell as sweet?
I’m not sure how that applies to our pig, except for the fact that a pig is going to stink no matter what his name is. For example, if the pig’s name were Rose or Petunia, or Strawberry, he would still be a smelly pig. However, this pig was so well educated and sophisticated, I’m not sure just how smelly he actually was. He might have been very pleasant. So, we could labor on and on about his name, but the best thing to do is just read the next chapter.
Chapter 2
ORANGE
Well, if I recall—and that’s not always something easily done, but—I was talking about Jes and the marvelous pig who had become his friend. Oh yes, I remember, I was about to tell you the pig’s name. But before I do, I must tell you about a very keen observation that Jes made about this extraordinarily talented pig. It happened one sleepless night…
Jes was lying in his bed, trying to go to sleep when he heard a low, sweet voice singing, You Are My Sunshine.
What a funny song to sing late at night when the sun is nowhere in sight. I’m just sure that’s what you were thinking. But that’s not the point. The point is, well I’m not sure what the point to that is, just the fact that Jes heard a low, sweet voice singing. He looked out the window and there, in the soft moonlight, he saw a pig. And it soon became obvious that the enchanting melody was coming from the lips of this ingenious, if not rather muddy, creature. Immediately he put on his bathrobe and rushed outside to get a closer look at the singing pig.
What? That’s not what you would have done? Well, confidentially, it’s not what I would have done either, but, well, at least I don’t think it’s what I would have done.
I’ve never encountered a singing pig before, so I’m not 100% sure what I would have done. But that’s what Jes did and immediately he noticed something else interesting about the pig. At first he thought it was just because of the moonlight, but after looking closely with his trusty flashlight, he saw for sure that the pig was beautiful. It was his coloring. You know how a pig’s ears traditionally have a soft, silky pink lining inside of them? Well, this pig had a soft creamy orange lining. Not a bright shocking orange, but, kind of peachy…yes, more like a cream sicle orange. And that cute little curl in the end of his tail was actually a double curl with a cream sicle orange tip at the very end. Jes was amazed at the sheer beauty of this pig. And the talent. And that was the first time Jes and the pig met. There were to be many more encounters.
Oh, I believe I promised to tell you the pig’s name. Get ready for a shock.
You’ve been imagining an astounding, profound name, right? What did I suggest before? Super Pig? Porkman? The Baconator? Well, as I said, his name was nothing like that.
It was very simply, very descriptively, Orange. But you need to know that there was more to his name than just a description of his ears and tail. Indeed, a great deal of thought had gone into his name.
The fact was, when he was born, his mother wanted to inspire him to greatness. You know how mothers are, right? So, basically, she named him after famous people who had inspired her in some way. His full name was Orville, after Orville Wright so he might follow his dreams and accomplish impossible tasks, Robert, after Robert E. Lee that he might be a person of good character, Abraham, after Abraham Lincoln that he might be honest and upright, Norman, after Norman Rockwell that he might strive to be creative, George, after George Washington, that he might learn to be a good leader, Engelbert after Engelbert Humperdinck to help him be musical. His mother loved Engelbert; Orange had never been too fond of him. So, in full, his name was Orville
