Empath - Jasveer Govender
Introduction
Congratulations on getting Empath: A Modern Survival Guide for Empaths and Highly Sensitive People in this Chaotic World. This book is aimed at empaths who are overwhelmed by the rigors of modern life and are having a hard time making sense of it all. Anyone with ties to an empath might too want to pick up this book so that they can learn of the role that they play in shaping an empath’s experiences and how best to relate with them.
The affliction that an empath struggles with might sound like fantasy to the average, well-adjusted Joe. An empath is practically an emotion magnet. They may be out in the streets, minding their own business, and suddenly weird thoughts start to become manifest inside their heads. These are thoughts that they cannot account for. So what happened? There’s someone in close proximity harboring those weird thoughts, but the empath not only attracted them but also passed them off as their own.
As you may imagine, such abilities would complicate anyone’s life, and empaths truly have it tough, at least until they learn to cope. This book explores the subject of empaths and lists down survival tactics that can help them put a stop to invasive energies and protect theirs as well.
Chapter 1: Are You an Empath?
Empaths are highly sensitive individuals who have the capability of absorbing other peoples’ energies. Highly intuitive, empaths have an accurate perception of their reality. They are also sensitive to various external stimuli such as excessive light and noise. The average empath grows weary of spending time in public places since they are weighed down by the thoughts and feelings of the people surrounding them. If you are an empath, your friends must have frequently accused you of being too sensitive.
Some people get the terms empathy
and empath
twisted. Empathy is an individual’s capability to recognize other people’s feelings and act in a manner that shows they are considerate of their feelings, but an empath is an individual that literally absorbs other peoples’ thoughts and feelings. Thus, having empathy wouldn’t in and of itself bring you pain, but being an empath could cause you emotional distress.
If you have the capacity to show empathy, you operate from a place of power, meaning you can choose to act on it or suppress it, but an empath is helpless against their condition, particularly if they are not aware of what’s going on.
Characteristics of an empath or highly sensitive individual
1. They absorb other people’s energies
One of the defining traits of empaths is that they absorb the energies floating about them. For this reason, empaths are averse to the idea of spending a lot of time in public, as it will cause them to absorb the negative energies of the people nearby. In the early days when an empath has no conception of what they are really like, this capability of theirs can bring them untold grief, making them imagine that something about them is off.
2. They are introverted
An introvert is an individual that prefers tranquil and marginally stimulating environments. When they socialize, they are drained of energy, and they have to take some time alone in order to recharge. People often mistake introversion for shyness. The average empath is likely to be an introvert. It doesn’t mean they aren’t open to any social engagements, but rather they’d much prefer socializing one-on-one, or within a small tight group. They like engaging in deep and engaging conversations instead of shallow small talk.
3. They are highly intuitive
For an empath, there is another tool for understanding reality besides rationality. It’s known as intuition. Empaths have an accurate gut feeling, and it keeps them abreast of what’s taking place. If you are an empath, you may have fallen into the habit of instinctively deciding whether a person is good or bad after a short encounter, and their later actions or words vindicated your decision.
4. They are overwhelmed by intimate relationships
Intimate relationships emphasize the importance of leaving yourself behind and fusing with your partner. But empaths are scared of losing their identity. It doesn’t mean that empaths won’t have any intimate relationship, but rather, they have first to redefine certain aspects of their relationships. They tend to be a bit complex. For an introvert to be in a successful intimate relationship, they require someone who’s both understanding and imaginative.
5. Empaths are targets for energy vampires
Due to their inherent compassionate nature, empaths send out a ton of positive light, except it attracts both the good and bad people. People who are going through hardships or are battling illnesses can actually feel better after interacting with spiritually-gifted empaths. However, empaths also attract a vicious type of humans known as energy vampires. They not only emit excessive negativity but also drain empaths of their physical energy. Once an energy vampire hangs out with an empath, the empath comes out of it feeling weak, and in a bad mood.
6. Empaths become replenished in nature
Nothing terrifies an empath more than a chaotic environment. They value peace and happiness. They are sensitive to things like excessive noise and light. And they try to make their living spaces as tranquil as possible. Nothing exemplifies peace and tranquility than the natural world, and that’s precisely why empaths like spending time in nature. It helps them cast away their worries and rejuvenate.
7. Selfless
The average person might be an egotist who only takes and hardly ever feels satisfied. But an empath is a big-hearted giver. Most empaths are not obsessed with acquiring material wealth. This is not to say that they have no ambition. Empaths place altruism and good-heartedness above material gain. People who have fallen on tough luck would be lucky to have an empath on their side as they would most definitely help them get back to their feet.
8. They connect with people much too fast
Once an empath takes a liking to someone, they can quickly become attached. This is because an empath can see beyond the surface far too quickly. An empath can find out the attributes of another person by just observing them for a short time. The average person requires some level of patience and adjustment before they bare out their souls to someone else.
9. Great at detecting lies
Another characteristic of an empath is their ability to detect a lie. The fact is there are a lot of lies being told, but liars have perfected the art, and their lies seem to be true. But an empath can hardly hear a lie and not see it for what it is. This ability of theirs shields them against heartbreak, especially where the cost is too much, for instance, on matters touching upon money and relationships.
10. Interested in making the world a better place
An empath has an innate desire to make the world a better place. They are all for improving the environment, reducing pollution, and uplifting humans. They draw immense pleasure from seeing that they are having a positive impact in the world. And that’s exactly why an empath is happy taking a job that will benefit humanity or the planet as opposed to pursuing their selfish ambitions.
11. They are very inquisitive
An empath has a particularly active mind, and they like to expand their knowledge. Thus, they approach many things with a childlike sense of wonder. Their curiosity stretches from everyday activities to the deep philosophical questions concerning the origin and fate of human beings. Their inquisitive nature has allowed them to have a wealth of knowledge and deep insight on a number of matters.
12. Highly creative
Thanks to their high sensitivity, deep curiosity, and solitary tendencies, empaths have a much-developed creative bone. This shows in the quality of their work. Their creativity is not restricted to aesthetic effects, but empaths can also provide solutions
