A Beg For Mercy - John Marcus Brown

    Chapter 1

    Papercut Bliss

Megan eventually left Texas to return home with her parents in the summer of 2015. After she went to visit Terrance to tell him about Mercedes, she never saw him again. After that, she removed herself from Mercedes’ life. Mercedes tried to keep in touch with her, but Megan severed the ties.

This was around the time when she fell into a deep depression because her time in Texas had turned into a nightmare. Nothing seemed to be going right for her, and losing contact with Terrance along with having an abortion took a psychological toll on her. She lost weight, her academic performance declined, and her overall ambition for life began to regress.

Megan ended up going to see a therapist to assist with her psychological issues. She found herself crying uncontrollably at random times with no signs of relief. She was an emotional, hormonal wreck. It was so bad to the point where her cousin, Zayn, was worried about her mental health.

Megan tried her best to make the most out of her new life in Texas, but her attempts were met with no avail. After all of these events took place, Megan pulled the plug on Texas and moved back to Mississippi. Zayn was disappointed that Megan’s stay was so short-lived, but nonetheless—she understood.

As we come back to the present and the summer of 2018 approaches, Megan has a lot to wrap her mind around. Not only has one of her shadows from the past come to revisit her, she now has to explain everything to Angie. As if there wasn’t already enough going on with Megan consoling her sister, she now has to deal with an old, unresolved issue—Mercedes.

Megan decided to let Angie in on who Mercedes was. She gave Angie the background info as well as the things that happened between them years prior in Texas. Megan talked for over an hour straight, and she had Angie’s undivided attention. Megan has never seen Angie so tuned-in to a conversation—so much so that Angie would barely blink.

As the conversation continued, one thing that sparked the most curiosity with Angie was the fact that Zayn had the inside scoop on Mercedes as well. Angie and Zayn have had a good relationship over the years, however—Megan and Zayn had a closer relationship. The more info Angie gained about the history of Mercedes, the more tempted she was to reach out to Zayn. Angie trusted her sister, but she more so saw this as an opportunity to reconnect with Zayn on a much deeper level.

Megan pretty much told Angie everything about Mercedes and Terrance except two critical parts: Her bisexuality with Mercedes and her abortion. She told Angie what she wanted her to know. More specifically, Megan conveyed the story in such a manner where Mercedes was portrayed as the villain. As anyone could imagine, Angie had several questions to ask about Mercedes.

    Angie opens with:

"So lemme get this straight—you and Mercedes were good friends up until Terrance went to prison? But you think she’s the reason because she was jealous of you?"

    "Yeah..."

    But how?

    "Because she’s a conniving bitch..."

But do you have proof of what she really did?

"After she met him, I could tell that she was always eying him and asking me questions about us. Like I said, we were doing good for a while, but then he went ghost on me. He wouldn’t return any of my calls nor respond to my texts. Mercedes and I went to lunch one day, and she asked me about him. That’s when she told me that he got arrested..."

Then she claimed one of her friends saw him pulled over?

"Yes. You just have to know her. I’m telling you—that bitch is dirty. I know she’s behind it because she didn’t want us together. Every good thing that comes along in my life gets ruined..."

"But—if you haven’t talked to her in years, then—how’d she end up here?"

    "I don’t know..."

"And how did she know who I was? When she stopped me, first thing she asked was, ‘Do you have a sister?’ and I told her that I did. Then she asked was ya name Megan. She said we look alike, but still—it’s too much of a coincidence..."

    That’s what I’m sayin’...

"Well—you don’t think Zayn said something to her, do you?"

"*Sighs*...I’d hope not. I thought we had more trust than that..."

Me too. But speaking of, I need to call Zayn—haven’t talked to her in a while.

I just talked to her yesterday, meant to tell you that she’s planning to come into town in a few weeks. She wants to celebrate my birthday here.

"Oh shit, really!? I definitely gotta call her then. But what are you gonna do if you happen to run into Mercedes? You think she’s gonna reach out to you?"

"I don’t even wanna see her. We really don’t have shit to talk about. And you need to stay away from her too. That bitch ain’t nothing but trouble..."

    "Okay—I gotcha..."

"And listen—I knew you really wouldn’t understand what I meant before, but this is why I began to disagree with what you were tryna do with Nevaeh. I owe you an apology. I know I encouraged you to disrupt Nevaeh’s relationship at first, but that was because I was still bitter towards Mercedes. Nevaeh had nothing to do with that. It was misguided anger—I was still mad at Mercedes, and I was holding on to hurt feelings from my past. I guess I just wanted someone else to feel my pain..."

    "But Megan—you could’ve told me..."

"I know...and I still feel bad. All of this is really my fault. From Nevaeh to Miguel, and even our relationship—I fucked up—and I’m woman enough to own it..."

"I mean, I appreciate you for clearing this up, but—I really wish you would’ve told me before. You tell me after all the shit hits the fan..."

"I know...but would you have really listened if I told you at the beginning? Because you already felt so strongly about Miguel..."

"Yeah, I would’ve listened! And it doesn’t matter how I felt, that’s why I came to you for advice before I did anything! If you would’ve told me this before, I would’ve never got in the way of what Nevaeh had. She really is a good person, and I’ve lost her due to fucked up advice. You know I’ve always trusted you—but it’s getting harder and harder to trust where ya loyalty lies..."

"Loyalty? I’ve always been in ya corner, Angie—don’t come at me like that. Yeah, I’ll admit it—I gave you some terrible advice at first. But in case you forgot—I tried to talk you out of it before shit hit the fan. That’s why I confronted you that night because I saw where it was headed! But you wanna question my loyalty? I said something because I was looking out for you! But you just had to see it through because ya mind was already made up and there was nothing I could do to stop you. And I’m still right here for you. So yeah—you tell me where my loyalty lies."

    .........

    "We good?"

    "...Yeah..."

    "You sure?"

    "...Yeah..."

    "Okay..."

Despite everything that Angie has been caught up in concerning the recent situation with Nevaeh, her bitterness is being redirected towards Mercedes. Angie only knows what she’s been told about Mercedes. Although Megan told her a lot of what happened—she conveniently left out the dirt that she did. Megan is also speaking so strongly against Mercedes because she knows that Mercedes knows about her dirty secrets. She doesn’t wanna risk Mercedes exposing the truth to Angie. Regardless, Angie is gonna trust her family ties—blood is thicker than water.

After they come to mutual grounds with their conversation, Angie goes on to text Zayn. Turns out, Zayn was available, so she calls Angie. The cousins take some time to catch up with good conversation and laughter. Zayn talked her fair share of shit over the phone and told them to get ready for the turn up. Zayn is about to help them kick off Summer ’18 the right way.

In the meantime, Javier has been contemplating when he’s gonna tell Miguel about his encounter with Nevaeh the day she was crying beside her car. Javier wanted to give it a little time because he didn’t want to over analyze anything. He’s the type that likes to take his time with things, but since Miguel is involved—there’s a sense of urgency.

Although finals week was approaching, and the Spring of 2018 was coming to a close, he still wanted to inform Miguel of what he witnessed. He knows everyone is focused on finishing the semester strong, but he still wants to send the message to Miguel. Here’s the catch: At this point, Javier doesn’t know why Nevaeh was crying; he just knew something was wrong. He doesn’t know yet that Nevaeh found out about Angie.

Before Javier even decided to reach out, Miguel ended up contacting him first. Over text, Miguel led with, Hey bro, are you free? Need to talk to you... Javier immediately knew that it had something to do with Nevaeh. So he replies back, Yeah man, I’m good whenever. Just lemme know. Miguel wanted to meet in person because a lot was bothering him.
