Ghost Sex in The US Virgin Islands

Synopsis: Ghost Sex in The US Virgin Islands, is a wry and erotic romance about how one woman copes with the appearance of a ghost in her bedroom and his request, after she has moved to the US Virgin islands.

When Mel walked into her bedroom, there was a man sitting on her bed.

Get out! she shrieked, which was her first inclination. She didn’t even think about the logistics of it — she’d been at home all evening, in and out of the room, the doors and windows locked.

However, the moment she shouted, the man vanished.

That was almost as troubling as the fact that he’d been there in the first place.

Mel tried not to freak out, even though she was already trembling. She checked and rechecked the door, the windows, and even under the bed. She investigated her closet in case someone had taken a saw to the wall and created another entrance into her apartment. Nevertheless, there was nothing. Not even a shoe was out of place.

Fine, she thought. That was all fine. There’d been a man on her bed, clear as day, but he was gone now.

Mel would’ve liked to forget about it, but she couldn’t just turn her back on the fact that she might be going crazy. She was seeing things. Things that weren’t there. Things that couldn’t be there.

She was losing her freaking mind.

That was somehow even worse than the possibility that there could’ve actually been a man in her bedroom. Mel didn’t want to go crazy. She’d had a good life. She had a decent job and benefits — for the first time in her life, blessed, blessed health insurance — and she’d finally found an apartment that she liked. She didn’t have any loud neighbors here, nor were there any tourists. Tourists were really the biggest problem of her existence at this point, and it just came with the territory.

Up until tonight, Mel had been living the dream — working and living in the U.S. Virgin Islands. This was her paradise. She didn’t want strange men in her bedroom intruding on it.

She slept in the living room that night, unwilling to venture into the darkened bedroom after what she’d seen. If there really was a stranger in there, even after the vanishing act, even after she’d triple checked that she was locked tightly into her apartment, then he could just find her and murder her on the couch.

The days passed and she started sleeping again in the bedroom. Time was so helpful in allowing her to forget her terror and her worry. Despite the fact that she was no longer scared of the little incident, Mel couldn’t help but think back on it.

The more that Mel thought about it, the more she realized that the man in the bedroom had been strange for more reasons than his simple existence. First, he’d been dressed funny. Yes, it had been strange — in the brief moment before she’d shrieked at him to leave, she’d noticed a frilly collar, a long, leather jacket in a sturdy material that could’ve been leather, and boots that nearly reached his knee.

Upon further reflection, it seemed to almost be some sort of costume. Nobody around here dressed like that. It was hot all the time. On the worst days, it was all Mel could do to force herself into a sundress. She couldn’t bear to think of boots and a leather jacket.

However, it wasn’t until she went to cover the opening of a historical museum for her job that she realized just what she’d seen. The museum’s crowning exhibit was a space devoted to sea exploration and discovery. In some of the illustrations that accompanied the dates and facts, she noticed that the men on ships were dressed just like the man who’d been sitting on her bed.

Okay. So maybe she had an exploration enthusiast on the loose. She bought a couple of books on the period from the museum gift shop and fell asleep reading them that night.

Sometime in the wee hours before gray dawn, she awoke with a sudden gasp. Mel flung her arm out to flip on her bedside lamp and stared hard. For the briefest of moments, the man had been there. He was gone, she confirmed, glancing around the room, blinking several times, rubbing her eyes hard, and staring again. There was nothing there except her closet, her chest of drawers, and the door that led to her bathroom.

She was alone in the room, but she hadn’t been. A strange feeling
