Jerry is too sensitive for Penny. She thinks he has narrow sexual boundaries and isn't fulfilling her needs. So, she dumps him. Jerry doesn't take it well, bottling up his frustration. Only, that leads to lurid dreams about her and a sexual obsession. One day, Penny cryptically tells him, "If you need something, you should take it." Figuring out what she mean, he realizes, may be the key to reuniting with her.

When I spent most of my time at work watching her – instead of reshelving library books – I knew my obsession with her had become unhealthy and had to stop. Secretly, I followed her around the library as she helped children, women, guys, and all sorts of patrons. Every time she bent over, I had to get a good look. Her wardrobe had shifted to tight jeans, now. I wanted these feelings out of me; I didn’t like the sort of man I had become. A few times, she caught me looking at her, and instead of becoming angry, she smiled and waved. Not once did she complain to the head librarian about me stalking her, and to be truthful, I really wasn’t. When you work at the same place, frequent the same cafes, it really isn’t stalking once you break up. It’s inconvenient and uncomfortable most of the times, but it isn’t stalking. After all, should I quit my job because I had a nasty break-up with a coworker? Still, I desperately wanted this fixation to stop.
Only, I couldn’t think of how I could unburden myself. Later on, one night, while organizing my clothes at home, I realized that I had one excuse left to talk to her – one pretense under which I could see her again. In the near-month we had been apart, I had never once ventured over to her place to reclaim my clothes. Penny still had a few pairs of my pants over there, as well as some ties and shirts. I quickly sat behind my laptop and typed out a quick, polite message.
The response was perplexing, at best: "If I have something that belongs to you, you should take it."

So, I wrote back, politely asking for clarification, but the response I got only read, "Again, if you need something, you should take it."

I thought about that all night. Even in my sleep, those words echoed inside my skull. The dreams stopped being overtly sexual, too. She stood before me naked, with her hands on her hips . . .

When Penny Haskell trotted into the coffee shop, I lowered my head and tried to will myself into invisibility. Only, that led to me putting my forehead into my hand, and lowering my gaze over my eReader, my pumpkin spice latte, and the table itself. I was positive that she wouldn’t see me out of the corner of her vision, and that she would just get her espresso and leave. Only, it didn’t work that way at all. What I had wanted to avoid happened. When I heard the noise of a chair leg against the floor, I glanced up and saw Penny sitting straight across the table from me.
