    To say the American healthcare system is in a major transition is putting it mildly. It feels like medical care has gone from bad to worse. And it’s not all in our heads. According to a 2014 report from the Commonwealth Fund, when it comes to quality, accessibility, and affordability of healthcare, the U.S. ranked last of 11 countries (UK, Switzerland, Sweden, Australia, Germany, Netherlands, New Zealand, Norway, France, and Canada).

    Whether you have insurance through your employer or purchase it through a provider, a considerable amount of your income is spent on healthcare. This includes insurance premiums, out-of-pocket costs, medications, and taxes (which pay for government programs). We pay so much yet we have so little control over where that money goes and how it gets used. Quite often, it feels like we’re not getting our money’s worth and there’s little we can do about it.
