    Chapter I

    THE AWAKENING

The Universe, a vast and incredibly majestic part of our existence. Throughout all time there have been civilizations that studied and tried to understand the true power of this incredible creation. There have also been tales and myths of how some beliefs have learned to harness its power, not only for good intentions, but some could harness its energy for corrupt and powerful dominance.

Many cultures have condemned such practices, and thus the tales and myths began to fade away out of existence. All except for one that is. While some hide the truth, others shame the truth, and then there are the ones who embrace the truth, who are the truth.

This story begins in a town in the most unlikely place called, Alberton, in Southern Africa.

A young male in his early 20’s with an average body, and pin-straight black hair, no longer than above he’s shoulders. The young man, trying to live a normal life amongst ordinary people, within a modern-day society was cast out while being labelled as a looser, a daydreamer, and mostly being called weirdo.

He had very little friends and always lived below the radar, trying not to draw any attention to himself. From a young age, Chad Reeves always felt a strange sensation that there was more to his life than met his needs. Little did he know that he would embark upon a journey to the truth of who he was to become? The young man was but just your average type of guy, who lived a normal life and had a simple plan. His plan was like all others, to be wealthy, healthy and happy. Unfortunately, destiny had a different plan for him in mind. Upon he’s 23rd birthday Chad developed a keen sense to discover the wonders of the universe, and what was it about this strange phenomena that certain beliefs and cultures would tell stories, and practice certain rituals to unlock paths that were deemed unfit by normal society.

Certain Lore and Myths had stories about developing great power from this unexplained energy source. Little did he know that this sensation was about to set him on a path that would change his life forever. On a Thursday late afternoon, At the public library, Chad found himself engulfed in books of Mythical, and legendary tales of how certain cultures and religions believed that there was a power to be awoken within the universe.

He had been reading for hours when he’s eyes felt as if they wanted to burst out of his head from all the concentrating.

Lifting his cell phone from the desk, switching it on to see what the time was. Oh, dam the library is about to close. I had better hurry before they lock me in, he commented with haste, in a mature deep voice.

Grabbing his bags, Chad rushed towards the staircase, when he accidentally tripped over a book lying on the ground, and with a loud thud, the young man knocked his head on a pillar as he fell to the wooden floor. Chad lay there unconscious for a while. Finally, as time passed by, he came too, head pounding, and slightly dizzy, Chad picked himself up, dusted himself off and began to run as fast as he could towards the stairs. Looking up to the top of the staircase he noticed the door had been shut.

He moved towards the door in the hope that no one had locked him inside, tugging vigorously on the handle. Ahhh man, I can’t believe this! He shouted.

He then reached for his cell phone from his left-hand trouser pocket, only to find that there was no signal. C’mon can this get any worse, now I’m locked in a library and there is no signal on my cell phone, what else can go wrong tonight. He said in disbelief.

But then he remembered that there was a guard on the premises, who always did his rounds every hour. Looking at the time, it was 19:15 when he questioned himself. Oh my, It’s so late. I must have passed out for at least 2 hours? Shaking that thought he knew that he had forty-five minutes before the guard would begin he’s rounds coming past this post.

With a pounding head, he remembered there were books that he wanted to take home but were still downstairs and he needed to retrieve them for his research. Walking down the staircase, he noticed that the book he stumbled over was nowhere to be seen. Was it only in his imagination or was it real? He thought.

Pushing that thought to the back of his mind, the young man continued down the path and had a look around while cautiously heading towards the desk where he was seated. Alert and always thinking in he’s subconscious, there was something or someone going to jump out of the shadows.

Finally reaching the desk he quickly picked up the books and turned around walking towards the stairs once more.

Suddenly Chad’s eyes widened and a chill rushed though he’s entire body, when he saw that the book he fell over was lying on the ground in the exact position as before. But the young man remembered that when he came back down it had been missing.

But now it's back? Confused and a little shaken.

Chad looked around and called out Hello is anyone there? This isn’t funny you know. But still there was no reply. Cautiously he crept closer towards the book, looking down upon it. He found that it was quite old, much larger than any other book we see every day.

The cover was of a genuine leather finish in an ox-blood colour. Kneeling down to take a closer look, while still looking around to make sure there was no one there watching him. He reached out, picking up the book, turning it over, to notice that the cover had borders that were beautifully crafted, and illuminated In gold and pearl white colour, with a strange symbol, resembling something like an M was pressed into the leathery finish.

Suspicious, at the whole ordeal, he held this book thinking to himself.

This seems to be a really old book, and would definitely be worth a read. Excited, he placed the book amongst the pile of others he had under his arm.

Glancing at the time once again, Chad commented. I had better hurry the guard should be here any moment now. Sprinting as fast as he could, nearly losing his balance, while slipping all over the polished floors. He finally made it up to the stairs while hearing the heavy footsteps outside the door.

He banged on the door with great intent, ensuring that the guard would hear him. Who is there? The guard called out, with he’s grumbling rugged voice. Excuse me, sir, please can you help me. The young man replied. What are you doing down there boy? You should not be in the library at this time of the evening.

I do apologize, sir but I was studying and never noticed that the time had gone by so quickly. Can you please get me out of here, I would like to go home and continue my research. Rustling his keys from his belt, the guard inserted a key in the keyhole, unlocking it. Opening the door, the guard stood there.

A tall man with short-hair, his bulky structure gave him an impressionable that he was assertively strong.

The dominant male figure, almost as if he were an escaped convict, had bold tattoos covering his neck and peering through he’s short-sleeved uniform. Staring at Chad with a slight smirk on his face, the large male asked, What was so important that you lost all track of time lad?

I actually tripped and fell, and only woke up 2 hours later; I was in such a rush because I have a paper to finish on Cultures and religions, and how they interoperate the universe and its so-called energy source. It is due tomorrow, and I need to complete it tonight. Chad said. Lying to the guard, knowing that without a good reason he probably wouldn’t’t allow him to leave with the books.

Well dear Lad, If only the younger generations could be like you, maybe we would live in a better world. But just so you know. Not all books have the facts, some are just stories, and some have truth in the words that are written. Noticing the guards' reaction and comment the young man laughed and said. Thank you, sir; I intend to find out the truth behind these tales, so that future generations can learn more from my findings.

As they walked through the library to the front door, the guard reached for his keys unlocking the door. He then stopped, turned to the young man, and said. I sincerely hope that all this studying pays off. Thank you, sir, I hope so too, Chad replied.

He clenched the books tightly as he began exiting the library when. Hey boy! The Guard called out to him. Turning around in his direction, the guard approached the young man and stared at the pile of books in his hands, while commenting. You dropped one. A sudden sweat began to appear, on Chad’s face with his pulse rate starting to race. Handing the book over, Chad noticed that is was the same book that he stumbled over and found on the floor.

That is quite an old book you have there, do you have permission to take it? The guard asked, implying that it was not allowed to leave the library. Y…..yes sir I do, Miss Brighton (Who was the librarian) she trusts me and lent it to me. The guard, raising his eyebrow, looked directly into his eyes. Then paused, smiled, and said. Ok then, have a good evening. Thank you sir, and may you have a good evening too.

The young man making his way home became excited and anxious to read this book which nearly caused him to spend the night in the library, finally reaching his destination; he opened the door to find that there was a cool breeze blowing through the place.

But he remembered that he never left any windows open, and there was no breeze blowing outside either.

Ignoring, this strange occurrence, he entered persistent and eager to get stuck into this rare and exotic book which he had discovered. Chad made his way to the kitchen and grabbed a bottle of mineral water from his refrigerator; he turned and headed back to the dining room table to start reading this strange book.

Clearing the clutter off the table he placed the book in front of him. Anxiety began to set in and caused his hands to quiver a bit whilst placing his right hand on the cover anxiously waiting to see what it had inside. Oh well here goes nothing Chad commented to himself. Pinching the right-hand corner opening it to find that the details within were simply amazing; there were a lot of old scribes marked on the sides of the pages, they were thick in texture, and well preserved.

It was almost as if they were from ancient days when man first discovered paper.

As Chad continued browsing through the rest of the book he found that the entire manuscript had been written in an old language. Too much of a disappointment, Chad was unable to read anything written within. Oh well. This was a waste of time He said rather annoyed.

But none the less, he was just simply stunned at the way the book was laid out, and even if it were too old to read.

It had so much detail that Chad could not resist. As he drew back one more page, he was now directly in the center of the book when he came across a specific page.

The page had a handprint drawn on it, indicating the same symbol pressed in the leather cover which was situated in the center of the palm. Much to he’s enthusiasm, Chad Cried out. Wow; finally, there is a bit of English I can understand. Moon shadow, He said softly to himself.

What does that mean? He though.

Continuing through the book, Chad started to feel fatigued and exhausted as he got to the last few pages when finally closing up the book, and calling it a night. The whole ordeal of tonight had disappointed him for he never found anything interesting in the old book as he expected. Minutes later while lying in bed there was one particular word that continuously played on his mind.

What does it mean? Chad thought.

Climbing out of his comfortable bed scouring around searching for a dictionary, or even an encyclopedia trying to unravel that peculiar word.

But in his attempts, there was no such explanation. Even more aggravated, feeling tired while exhausting all possibilities Chad went back to bed.

I will return the book, to the library in the morning. For it was of no use to me, he uttered. Pulling back the covers and settling in for a much well deserved night’s sleep. Chad reached out to turn he’s bedside lamp off. Closing his eyes, and began to dose off, he gave a monstrous yawn, as he set in for the night.

Ding, Dong. The doorbell rang. For crying out loud! The young man yelled as he became cozy in the warm bed. He turned over hoping that by ignoring the doorbell, whoever it was would leave. Ding, Dong. It went off again. Who the hell is there! Chad shouted out aloud, but there was no reply.

Agitated he got out of bed putting on his night robe, storming down the hall towards the door. As soon as he got there, the doorbell sounded again. In a rage, Chad unlocked the door and swung it open with a force nearly banging the wall next to it.

He peered outside and there to his amazement stood the guard from the library.

Un-uniformed and in a long grey hooded robe. He said "I do apologize for disturbing you at this time of the evening.

But there is something I need to discuss with you." Looking at the dominant figure, the young man was shocked that he even knew where he stayed. He had probably gotten it from my records at the library. Chad thought to himself. He really hoped that this wasn’t anything to do with the book he took from the library.

With an irritable and unwelcoming voice, Chad allowed the man to enter his premises, by commenting. Sure, you may come in seeing as though it’s that important to you. Thank you and please call me Blaine. Stretching out his hand, Chad shook Blaine’s hand and introduced himself to this overwhelming and assertive man. Hi there Blaine my name is Chad Reeves.

The hooded man smiled and entered his home, whilst heading down the hallway towards the dining room. Chad shut the door behind him and walked after the visitor.

Entering the dining room, Blaine was sitting there at the table looking directly at him, as if Chad had committed the crime of the century. He uttered. So…..Did you find what you were looking for in that book?

Shocked at that moment, Chad uttered. No I can’t read those pages; they’re in a strange old language. Ahhhh… so you haven’t tried to decipher it? The visitor questioned.

No I haven’t but there was only one word that I could read. It read Moon shadow? The young male responded

What does it even mean? He asked.

Blaine looked at the nervous youngster, and calmly, replied. I shall reveal all to you dear Lad. But would it be possible to have a drink? Chad nodding his’s head walked over to the kitchen to fetch both of them a drink. Thinking to himself, that this has been the most extraordinary evening he ever had.

He began to smile while shaking his head.

Pouring Blaine and himself a strong whiskey, he returned back to the dining room only to find the visitor looking out the window into the back yard. Um… Um…. Blaine, here is your drink. The man turned slowly and walked over to the youngster.

    Is everything ok? Chad asked.

All is good Lad. The tall guard stated.

Chad gave him his drink, and he took a smooth long sip. Oh yes, that’s just what the doctor ordered. Bringing a pleasing smile to his face.

Please let us have a seat, so I can fill you in on all of what that book says. Whilst openhandedly pointing to the table.

My apologies Blaine, but how is it that you are able to read this book? The overly anxious youngster asked. Well Chad, I am able to read this book, as it was my ancestors who wrote it. You see Chad this book is dated back to around 2000 B.C. Amazed at what he had just heard, Chad had never thought that this book was that old.

Blaine, that is astonishing that this book has survived this long. He commented.

The dominant man smiled and responded.

Chad, this is not your ordinary book you see. This book is a magical book and only appears every thousand years. But to the untrained eye, this book will go unnoticed. In other words Chad, you have the gift, and that gift is what I need to speak to you about.

With him saying that the young man was a bit shocked but excited at the same time. Noticing the way he handled the book by hovering he’s hands over the cover uttering in a strange yet soothing tone. Oooom…..Baaaaaa….Yetshur, Stambaar…

There was a sudden glow that appeared from the inside of the book. Chad nearly fell off his chair, astonished at what he had just witnessed. Staring at the man, he commented. How did you do that? It’s called magic Chad. Blaine explained. You see Chad I am from a long line of Druid descent, and possibly the last remaining member of my kind. That isn’t possible!" The young man exclaimed.

Druids are only fictional characters in stories. "No, that is not entirely true, we exist, much as do other so-called fictional characters.

We have been cast aside from modern society, and living in the shadows, taking on roles of normal individuals."

The Druid suddenly stretched out his arm, with an open hand requesting. Give me your right hand! Hesitant and a little nervous Chad did as he asked. The Druid placed Chad’s hand on the page which read Moon shadow.

Pressing the young man’s hand down upon the sketch, the page began to light up with a blue flame, engulfing it. Chad’s hand started shaking from the energy pulsing through the page. Suddenly he felt a great sense of pressure rushing through his body. He quickly pulled his hand away from the book, holding it close to his chest. Chad jumped up off the chair and stood back looking at Blaine. Raising his voice, he shouted at the Druid. What was up with that?

You told me that you would help me understand this book, but all you have done is wake me up, tell me tall tales of magic and druids while doing some sort of trick on me. I want you to leave now! Chad yelled to the visitor. He stormed towards the front door, upset and afraid at the same time. Yelling out once more. Don’t forget to take that accursed book of yours with you!

He reached for the door, when suddenly Blaine stood there in front of him.

I do apologize Chad, I too was startled at this whole ordeal. Please let me take the time to explain. The Druid pleaded with the juvenile. No, I don’t think so. Chad said.

Please, it is of grave importance that I need to tell you, of what I know. Looking at the druid Chad could see the severity, and that he never meant for what had previously happened. With that, he decided to give him another chance.

Ok Blaine, but if you pull any more of those stunts again you’re out of here, got it. Don’t worry, it won’t happen again. The druid responded.

Walking back to the dining room, Chad looked to the druid and asked. Blaine; how was it that you moved so quickly? I mean, I had just gotten to my front door and there you were within an instant that is not humanly possible.

The dominant figure paused and looked at the young male, with a smirk on his face he replied. Now do you believe in magic? Chad stunned at his response, left him with no other choice, but to believe that a large man moving so quickly without even breaking a sweat, or short of breath. It had to be. Chad replied. Now I do.

Good then let us continue and get to what I need to tell you, Blaine stated as he decided to sit down on the black leather sofa in the living room instead.

Chad took a seat opposite him in the other black leather chair. When the druid snapped he’s fingers, and from out of nowhere, the book appeared on the glass top coffee table. Chad’s face dropped in astonishment, and looked at Blaine, with shock. The druid, not paying attention to the young male’s expression, moved closer to the table and opened the cover of the book. Come closer Chad. The druid commanded.

Slowly Chad got up from the chair and moved over towards him. He sat down next to the visitor and followed his eyes as he was reading the first page of the book.

Remember I told you earlier that this book was ancient and it was written around 2000 years B.C, and that it only appears every one thousand years for a specific reason. The large druid commented. Still a little confused at what he was being told, Chad sat still and listened.

The druid continued by stating. Chad what I’m trying to say is that this book has been searching throughout eternity for you. You are the key; you are the one. You are the Moon shadow. I’m sorry Blaine but I’m having a bit of a hard time believing you.

    "It’s ok Chad I never
