    CHAPTER 1

    The Cave

    Once upon a time, there lived a mean old dragon named Grozzlesnark who loved nothing better than to swoop down on sleepy little villages and frighten the wits out of the people who lived in them. From high up in the sky, he would spy little groups of people walking down a street or having their lunch in the park and start his downward plunge towards them. The first thing they knew was a giant shadow on the ground all around them, followed by the sound of huge flapping wings and hideous shrieking laughter. Sometimes he would breathe fire and the tops of their heads would be scorched or their hats set alight. At other times he would simply breathe all over them and the stench of his breath was so foul that they would have to throw away whatever clothes they were wearing and spend the next three days in a hot bath trying to scrub away the horrible stink. And sometimes, when he was in a really bad mood, he would set the roofs of the houses on fire.

    In the village of Dibbleblot, everyone had had enough. In fact, they had had more than enough. It was the third time in a week that Grozzlesnark had paid them a visit, and there was hardly a head of hair in town that had not been singed. So, first thing on Saturday morning, the people of the town gathered together in the town hall to have a meeting and try to decide what to do. They talked and talked and lots of people said how upset they felt about the whole situation and how something really should be done about it, but nobody seemed to have any really good
