Chapter 1
In one instant, everything changed. It had been a completely normal day in Spokane, in a normal month, in normal life. But now, on one side of the living room was Michelle Dinelli, a sixteen-year-old student, her left hand still on the doorknob and her keys still in her right, having just let herself into her house after school. On the other side of the room, sitting on the sofa, was a dark-haired man she’d never seen before, wearing a black suit and tie with a white shirt. He met her eyes as she saw him there, and now the time seemed frozen.
Thoughts started racing through her head. This is wrong. He shouldn’t be here. Mom’s definitely still at work at the hospital. What a cheesy suit. If he was wearing dark sunglasses he’d look like one of those cliché mysterious guys in dark suits from the movies.
He stood, and time seemed to go back to normal, but her thoughts were still racing a mile a minute. He was a bit taller than average, maybe five feel eleven with an average build, and when he spoke his voice was quite a bit deeper than she expected.
Michelle Selene Dinelli, I’m FBI Special Agent Bob Foster. I’ll need you to come with me.
he stated as he started walking towards her.
What are you doing in my house?! You got any ID?!
she nervously demanded, and hated that she sounded a lot less confident than she’d intended. What’s this all about? Am I under arrest?
she added as he took his wallet out of his jacket’s breast pocket and opened it for her.
The door was open, so I let myself in to wait for you.
he casually explained as she peered at the wallet and brushed back a few of her brunette curls. And you’re not in any trouble, I just need you to come back to the Field Office to look at some pictures and answer some questions. You might have witnessed a crime and not realized it at the time.
There is ZERO chance that the door was unlocked, let alone that it was open! Michelle thought as he put the wallet away. The ID and the badge look real. They look brand new, with no wear at all, but the expiry date is only five months from now. It could still be real, but… I just don’t believe this guy, or trust him! I’m NOT going with him! But if I refuse to
