An Introduction

Africa is a weird and wonderful place.

It is sometimes difficult for those who have never spent time on the Dark Continent to believe some of the things that happen there. Maybe a few of you have been to South Africa on holiday, or a Masai Mara safari, possibly even an Indian Ocean vacation in Mombasa. But the Africa I’m talking about isn’t a tourist destination, this story is based partially on actual events, and it took place on the edge of Kampala, the capital city of Uganda.

Now look in any holiday brochure and you will probably struggle to find any organised break centred in Kampala, and for good reason, there isn’t really a great deal for tourists to do. So I suppose that it can be considered off the beaten track... mostly the region caters for locals with a few small pockets of 1st World amenities for all of the western aid workers. These pockets feature mainly bars and restaurants. Now you may ask why am I wandering around in circles here... so I will make my point.

In the developed world, when in a restaurant or bar it is automatically assumed that there will be toilet facilities. Well that is the developed world, not rural Africa.

So picture the scene. Just on the outskirts of the city where the council have drawn a line, just outside the main developed zone. An area that’s not quite slums but certainly not up-market, there is a small collection of bars. Basic bars that often struggle to serve a cold beer. Bars that are constructed from wood and corrugated metal sheets. Colourful is a word used on occasion, there you will find almost every level of Ugandan society. From street people hustling for a small plastic bottle of waragi (local brew that tastes like gin) to highly placed government officials sitting in the darkened areas with hookers or mistresses. Often they will order roast pork mixed with tomatoes and matoke (a type of unripe banana), or chicken pieces that are deep fried on the side of a dusty road, or the staple snack a rolex, which is simply a chapati with
