Marshall was raised in harsh conditions, amid conflict between Mommy and Daddy. His parents were separated for reasons that Marshall would never understand, because each parent told a story to protect him- or herself. Marshall agreed with whoever was talking at any given moment to avoid conflict and dispute. His parents were uneducated; it was all about the hustle to Marshall, due to his poverty. Marshall was a sole trader; at school, he sold sweets, snacks, lollipops and muffins in order to look like other kids at school. He also provided himself with clothing, as it was hard for his parents to meet his demands and needs. Marshall was a responsible young man; from his profits, he saved money to buy himself toiletries – imagine what it would be like if he was female. He did not even remember when last his parents had bought a pack of underwear for him. His home background and living conditions had made him a bad boy who always had negative thoughts and an unscrupulous attitude. He used hate speech and foul language on anyone, be it an adult or teenager; he did not care, because he thought no one cared about him. He had thoughts of committing suicide multiple times, but never had the guts to do it. The only time he was happy was when he was at school, where all the stresses of the world were paused.

Marshall introduced drugs, alcohol and sex into his life; he thought that those things would overcome his obstacles in life. He realised that drugs were useless; you had hallucinations for a few minutes from pills that were costly. He never believed in wasting money. He tried to drink away all his problems, but when he was sober they returned. He was anguished about the reasons for everything. Sometimes he blamed God for everything, and other times his parents for creating him. If he felt that way, how did his eight siblings feel? Marshall was living a lie. He would smile at the world, yet knowing deep inside that he was not okay. He was a womaniser; he got every girl he ever liked. He never dated girls for the sake of love, but for the sake of pleasure. He was the boy who knew all the foreplay of sexual intercourse; he made sure that all his girlfriends got mind-blowing pleasure. When he lost his virginity, he thought that sexual intercourse was pointless, because he did not enjoy the experience one bit.

He started dating a number of girls and watching romantic movies, trying to get to know girls better. He wanted to be perfect in all his romantic relationships so he learnt how to be a romantic gentleman from movies he watched. He learnt how to make a girl feel special and wanted. He was perfect in the eyes of girls; a boy whom each and every girl wanted. Marshall was romantic. He took his girls to movies, never used foul or derogatory words when talking to women, never disagreed with a decision made by a girl, bought roses, took them to parks for picnics, fed them chocolates while making eye contact, sent sweet good morning and goodnight messages, spoke on the phone for hours, and opened doors, saying ‘ladies first’. He was courteous. He was a virgin to all the girls he met. He always invited girls to his place with words like ‘let us watch a movie at my place’; all the girls fell for it. He gave pleasure that made good girls go bad. Marshall would play soft music, whisper words of love and buoyant emotions, and then strip your clothes from you. He would make you feel comfortable being naked on his bed in front of him. He would strip while you watched to show you that he was not scared and you should relax too. He would suck your clitoris and labia so that you would tap your feet non-stop and grab the sheets. He would tie you up and make sure he covered your eyes – he built the foundation of trust – and then he would play with ice on sensitive parts of your body. It felt incredible. The ice play near the belly and between the thighs makes the brain release hormones that leave you begging for pleasure. He took his time and used different sex positions to make the sex mind-blowing. After sex, he spoke to you, making sure you were okay. He would then bring dessert and enjoy the luxury of dessert while in bed, naked. He helped you to get dressed again, since he was the one who had undressed you in the first place. When you went to bed, you found it hard to sleep, because he made your day. Blissful memories tortured you; the sex was gracious and gratifying. Marshall was not happy, even though he made his girls happy. He was looking for love, a serious relationship without disloyalty and deception. Every girl who had ever slept with Marshall loved him.

Grace was mischievous. Like every other young adult, she was always looking for entertainment. She could not stand being all by herself, enjoying her time all alone, and she was easily bored. She fell under the ‘bad girl concussion group’. Bad girls were loved simply because they were rated ‘cool’. She was infamous. Her friends were well known for their ‘minx mistress’ behaviour – having sex with every well-known boy; their stories were very difficult to understand, whether they were addicted or suffering from peer pressure. No one knew their motive for doing what they did. Grace was in a relationship, because all her friends had boyfriends. She felt depressed, because the boys she dated were violent boys who abused her emotionally and physically. Each time she disagreed with them, they would turn violent. She never knew her rights and she believed that, if someone struck you, he was expressing his love and dedication. She lost her virginity in a deceitful manner. She lost it in front of her friend at a pool party. Everyone at the party knew what was happening. The boy who took her virginity did not care much and never attached feelings when he had sex with her. He was only interested in getting pleasure for himself.

The gossipers spread it around. She decided to change her high school and join a ‘girls’ only’ school, because she wanted a new start and regretted what she had done at the pool party. She made new friends and enjoyed her stay in her new school. She decided to take a break from relationships and she forgot about the past. Was it possible to forgive and forget? Was it possible to run away from your problems? Could a person literally brainwash herself or himself?

    ♦ ♦ ♦

Marshall had a distressing day at school. On his way home, he met Grace, and they exchanged greetings. He said, Grace, I know you hate me, but I have a story to tell. Will you walk with me?

She agreed. They walked silently, each in their own thoughts, until they reached a park, where they could rest and talk properly, making eye contact to avoid telling lies.

Why did you leave me? she asked.

Kevin told me to leave you alone, because you were dating him. I could not do much, because we were friends with benefits and, when I asked you to make things official between us, you said you were not yet ready for a relationship.

Kevin lied to you. He wanted to sleep with me; that is what he was after – pussy.

I didn’t know that; it is true that the truth hurts and sets you free, said Marshall.

There is nothing we can do about the past; let it go and bury it – ‘what ifs’ won’t do us any good now, said Grace.

How can you bury something that you still treasure and never stopped loving? asked Marshall.

My heart is too fragile and people played with it as if it was an instrument. I am afraid of ill-treating my heart with bliss and then the heartache that will no doubt follow; it is too risky. I cannot take the risk. I am not a risker, Marshall, responded Grace.

I never stopped loving you and I do not believe that someday I will. Love is a blessing; something someone should not be afraid to find and embrace. Give me a chance to express my love to you. All my life, I wanted something solid. My play time is over; let us start a new chapter with love and commitment, said Marshall.

I have been looking for someone to settle down with and who will love me too; my heart agrees with the feeling, but my mind believes you are still a womaniser. I will give you a chance, Marshall. I give you my heart – take note; it is not a toy, answered Grace.

Trust me, Grace; that is all I need in my life – commitment and real love. I want to feel loved, said Marshall.

I am not like other girls. I need you to see me each and every day. I need you to take me with you wherever you go, be it a family event or your friends; I do not care. I want to be seen with you. I need you to be my friend and, most importantly, I need you to be honest with me at all time, said Grace.

Grace, I understand and agree to your demands. I shall do what it takes to make you happy, because your happiness is important, responded Marshall.

Marshall and Grace were both ebullient. It felt like the day was a dream and a miracle. As soon as Grace arrived home, she sent a message to Marshall on Facebook stating that she loved him. It was too soon to make the relationship official, but there was no patience in two people who were crazy in love with each other. Marshall updated his relationship status on Facebook to tell his friends and family that he was in a relationship with Grace. A lot of friends were happy about the relationship.

For a change, Marshall went to bed content and without crying. The love he had found made him forget all his problems.

    ♦ ♦ ♦

Grace was light-hearted, but scared too. She pondered and the thoughts distressed her. She was straddled between the past and the future. Will Marshall abuse me too? Is he like my previous lovers? His words had been promising and fond. I trust him, she thought.

Love was a beautiful thing, but it was not about beauty; it was how you treated each other and what you offered each other that made it beautiful. Love could also be heartless.

First dates were always important; they were mostly about getting to know each other better, sharing ideas, giving opinions on certain ideas, expressing your personality type and exposing your interests. You should be careful about what you said, because sometimes people judged your character based on what you said and how you responded. First impressions were important, just like at a job interview. A girl should be treated like a princess – note ‘girl’ and not ‘woman’. The term ‘girl’ was apt, because girls were cute, adorable, pretty, beautiful and attractive. Women were described in the same way, but there were words that we couldn’t use to describe them, like cute and pretty. They were too old to be called these things. There were girls who were princesses royally and girls who were princesses in their own world, but honestly, every girl deserved to be a princess.

We all wanted our first dates to be fanciful and real. The boy should choose a restaurant that has an excellent table and a beautiful romantic setting. He should make sure that he knows what kind of food the restaurant serves. He should book a table for two so it is highly improbable that they will be disturbed. Formal was attractive and classy. He should shave to look clean and smooth, and make sure his hair is neat and clean. He should also not forget his aftershave. The restaurant should be one that provides good food and dessert to satisfy a sweet tooth. He should make sure his date feels comfortable and confident, allowing her to be open-minded. After dinner, a long walk should be considered to see the beauty of nature, such as the stars and moon, to build the image of romance while sharing your thoughts under the night sky, filled with a full moon and stars.

    ♦ ♦ ♦

Marshall wished that he could take Grace on a first date, but he had financial problems. Money couldn’t buy you happiness, right, but you still needed it. He woke up happy the next morning, excited about the first date even though he had no money. He sent a message to Grace: Good morning, beautiful. I hope you had a good night’s sleep. I will pick you up at 12pm; please be ready, my love. I cannot wait to see you. I send my love. He was ready for his date before the time.

Marshall arrived at the pick-up place and informed Grace that he was waiting for her. When she appeared, he could not help but blush. She was not too elegant, but was stunning; she was wearing a dress that shaped her entire body. The dress showed off her tremendous curves, and her hair was not tied up, but did not hide her face. She is way too beautiful; her beauty glistens like the blue skies of the horizon, Marshall thought. He would never forget the sweet smile she gave him when she offered her greetings. Grace was shy; she never made eye contact even though Marshall looked at her without her being aware, Grace never attempted to make eye contact. She had beautiful eyes. Marshall could not understand why she was shy to express such great beauty; maybe it was because it was their first date.

Good afternoon. How are you feeling today, Grace? asked Marshall.

I am good; thank you for asking – and how are you feeling, Marshall? Grace replied and asked.

I am feeling well. You are beautiful, I must say, stated Marshall.

Thank you. She blushed, unable to hide her face.

May we depart? I have a place in mind I am sure you will like, said Marshall.

Marshall and Grace walked, sharing great stories and making jokes, smiling and laughing the entire time. They stopped at a take-away restaurant and Marshall ordered two take-away meals. Afterwards, they headed to a ‘lovers’ lounge park’ – a park that is tranquil, and relaxes your mind and soul. They found the perfect spot and sat.

Marshall, I would be pleased if we ate together and shared, said Grace.

No problem; I would love that too. He smiled.

They had a great conversation while they ate their lunch. They took their first relationship picture; it was not too perfect, but to them the picture was a work of art. Everything that involving love was beautiful and perfect. They both had a praiseworthy and productive day, but the day was not yet over. He walked her home, where she hugged him and told him, Marshall, I love you.

I love you more, he replied.

Marshall was tempted to take the first kiss of their relationship, and he remembered what his grandfather had once told him: when you are ready to kiss a girl for the first time, do not kiss her; she is not yet ready; her actions will show you when she is ready. Marshall looked straight into her eyes, trying to communicate his wish to kiss her.

Grace got the message. Marshall, I am not yet ready to kiss you and I am afraid of these people in front of us. Goodbye; I will see you tomorrow. She smiled and to her front door.

Marshall watched her disappear into her home. Marshall walked away exuberant. At this time of year, he was supposed to be preparing for his mid-year examinations. It was true that love blinded all eyes, but Marshall believed in equilibrium. His study timetable allowed little time for himself and he could not stop thinking about Grace. He shuffled his study timetable – he had to start studying at 9am, so he moved the time to 5am. He would wake up at 5am to study, so he could finish studying by 2pm to make enough time for him and Grace.

Marshall sent a message to Grace: I would like to thank you for this day; you made me realise the other part of me I never knew. I am glad that we are together. Goodnight, sweetheart. I love you; sweet dreams.

Grace sent a reply: No, I am glad I met you and I enjoyed my day; thank you. Goodnight, my love.

They both went to bed smiling and filled with joyful emotions.

    ♦ ♦ ♦

Marshall woke up jubilant. He could not stop thinking about Grace. He got out his books and started to study. He could not wait to see Grace again, but he kept away from his cell phone to avoid texting her. His alarm went off to remind him that his study time was over. He took a long bath, making sure he was properly clean. He also made a scrumptious meal for lunch – four slices of white bread, scrambled eggs, two fried sausages, one slice of tomato, two slices of cheese and a hundred percent fruit juice. The meal expressed how happy he was.

He picked up Grace and took her to Betty’s house. Betty was one of his friends and had never liked Grace, but, because she was dating Marshall, she accepted that she was part of her friend’s life and welcomed Grace. They all had fun, danced, sang, played and chatted about various things. Marshall and Grace eventually got up and told Betty that it was time to leave and she must not worry; they both knew their way to the front door. At the door, Marshall gently pulled Grace closer to him and stole a kiss, but the kiss was not quite enough. Marshall placed his hands on her waist and felt her figure, and then pulled her much closer. He gave her an affectionate kiss; he closed his eyes and felt the lusciousness of the kiss. She also closed her eyes and felt the bliss of sugar-coated kisses. It was worth the risk.

She stopped and asked, What happens if we get caught smooching here in front of the door?

Shut up and kiss me, he said.

His hands roamed her body, touching her behind. She enjoyed every moment and could not let him go, but she had to, because it was time to go. The final kiss ended with a lip bite and words like ‘I cherish you’. They hugged one more time and gave each other baby kisses. Cute, she said.

It was goodbye for the day.

    ♦ ♦ ♦

In the early stages of a relationship, everything was smooth and stunning – the honeymoon phase. We did all the little things that made our partners happy, but for how long? We promised each other things like: I love you and I will always be with you. Did we actually keep our promises or were promises meant to be broken, because most times they sound like rules to which we have to adhere? So we broke our promises, because we simply broke our rules too. Maybe we were meant to be broken, because we loved what was broken; therefore, why should our hearts not be fragile? The word ‘glue’ did not exist, because we couldn’t fix what was broken; it seemed like everything was glass.

    ♦ ♦ ♦

The following day, Marshall and Grace went to Orlando Stadium, where they had private seating. Love was in the air. He gave Grace a mountain of strawberry chocolate kisses filled with passionate affection. They got too cosy; they felt the warmth and hyperventilating pleasure of the kisses. I wish we were indoors, she said.

Marshall growled and, with a sexy tone, murmured, What would you like to do with me, dearest?

A hot ride of a lifetime, she replied.

I can imagine it already, he said.

The kisses were deep indeed and rough; their lips were swollen and they were not bothered, as they could not get enough of each other.

    ♦ ♦ ♦

On his way home after leaving Grace’s house, Marshall bumped into Betty. She spoke to him scornfully, without even greeting him.

Out of all the people in this world, you choose Grace; what is so special about her? What about my friend whom you are also dating, or did you forget that you are still dating her? How will Nikki feel about this thing with you and Grace? asked Betty.

I love Nikki, but she is too young for me. I want someone who will make time for me and who is looking for a committed relationship and it turns out that Grace is all I ever wanted, Marshall replied.

Will you break up with Nikki? asked Betty.

No, Nikki and I hardly spend time together, so I believe it will fade away, Marshall replied.

Okay, goodbye then, Marshall; see you when I see you, said Betty.

Marshall was confused. Why does Betty care so much about Nikki? Particularly since when he had first started dating Nicki, Betty had asked ‘how could you date Nikki; she is way too young for you’.

As soon as Marshall arrived home, he sent a text message to Grace: Good evening, beautiful. I think we should update our Facebook profile pictures as well as our cover photos with the pictures we took together. It is about time people know that we are a couple.

She replied to the text message: It is a great idea. I love it and our pictures should be the same and when we update them we update them at the same time.

They updated their pictures, and Facebook friends and family loved the pictures. Their Facebook friends and family made great comments on their pictures, such as ‘great couple; you are meant for each other’, ‘this is what I call love’, ‘you inspire the youth in love’, ‘we love you’ and ‘never give up on each other’. They loved each other and friends loved them as a couple, and that made their love even stronger.

On a nice sunny day, Nicole was having lunch with Beauty at the Wimpy restaurant at Campus Square Centre. They were having a girly chat when, suddenly, confessions were made.

I have something to tell you, but promise not to laugh, said Nicole.

I promise not to; please tell me. The curiosity is killing me, said Beauty.

It is not easy to confide, Nicole said.

Okay, I understand, Nicole, but please tell me when you are ready to confide it. I am here for you and I will not judge you; you are my friend, after all, said Beauty.

I am in love with Marshall, said Nicole.

    Is it possible? asked Beauty.

Yes, Marshall is a gentleman. He opens doors for me, holds my hand in public and does not make choices for me; he only asks whether I want a certain product or not. He considers me before he considers himself, and he is courtly and caring. Why should I not fall in love with such a person? Nicole asked.

I am bewildered. You know the kind of guy he is, but you still fell in love with him. I guess that is true love. I support your decision and your feelings, said Beauty.

Thank you for understanding, said Nicole.

Why don’t you just tell him how you feel? said Beauty.

I cannot; he is in a relationship with a girl called Grace and I think it is serious, said Nicole.

Beauty scoffed, How do you know that?

His Facebook relationship status states so, said Nicole.

Marshall would not do that unless it is official and serious, said Beauty.

He even posted a great number of pictures with the girl, said Nicole.

I cannot believe this. I am his friend, but he never told me about her, said Beauty curiously.

It is okay, my friend; let us leave. We have to get back to studying; we are writing our mid-year examinations soon, Nicole said, in a lower, sad voice.

    ♦ ♦ ♦

Early the following morning, Beauty phoned Marshall. Good morning, how are you, Marshall? asked Beauty.

Good morning, friend. I am good; thanks for asking. How are you today? Marshall asked.

I am good. I have something important to tell you, said Beauty.

My ears are all yours, dear friend, said Marshall.

Nicole fell in love with you and you once loved her, so this is your chance to be with her, said Beauty.

Beauty, I found someone and the relationship is serious. I cannot just leave the person I am currently with for Nicole, said Marshall.

I thought you loved her, said Beauty.

Yes, I loved her, but she was interested in someone else and that someone else turns out to be our friend, Moses. Remember Moses’ mother’s funeral? She was all flirty with him, said Marshall.

What if she was just being kind to him? Beauty asked.

Beauty, you are such a villainous deceiver; you once told Moses that Nicole would like to meet up with him privately. Even if Nicole was being kind to Moses, my sympathy for Moses was offered by giving him and Nicole a chance to date, said Marshall.

"Okay, I am happy for you and Grace. I actually
