When my son was in ninth grade, he attended an engineering class for the first time. After school, I picked him up. On the way home, I asked what he learned in the engineering class. He said he learned the first law of engineering. I asked him what the first law was. He said the first law of engineering is safety. Moving Past A Superficial Understanding

In this book, there is a life principle written by Marcus Aurelius. He wrote what he learned from Rusticus, Learn to...read carefully and not to be satisfied with a superficial understanding of a book. You should not make decisions based on a superficial understanding of something. Do not make decisions based on only a motto, slogan, or a quote that you do not know the original context. In today’s social media world, I see quotes, mottos, and slogans sent thousands of times a day. Ask yourself, what does that quote mean? What is its context? Does it apply to you or your particular life situation? Research wisely before acting unwisely.

One night, a young lady shared her story in a class I taught. The topic that night was to share an emotional story. Her story was about an injury that occurred to her Achilles’ tendon as she was running a marathon. At a point in the run, she felt a sharp pain in her lower right leg. She did not know what the pain was, and she decided to keep running, and for an extended time. She had never fully recovered from that injury (by the time she gave that speech-five years after it occurred) and it prevented her from doing what she loved- running. Her doctors asked why she kept running after the pain started. She said that she kept repeating in her thoughts a slogan she had heard once. The slogan was: no pain, no gain. If this young lady had known the context of no pain, no gain, she would have stopped running and could have reduced the severity of her injury. If the authors or trainers, that used that slogan, were with her that day on her run, they would have told her to stop running, because no pain, no gain did not mean the pain from an injury. There is a specific context in which that slogan applies and is helpful. Unfortunately, many people are making poor life decisions because they only had a superficial understanding of what a motto, slogan, quote, video, article, blog post, or a book meant. So, do your research, be safe and be wise.
