    Chapter 1

    The Mysterious Field Trip

It was that time of year where the cool autumn breeze swirled dead leaves across the yellowing grass. The trees, gently swaying against the overcast sky, were brown and almost bare. The excitement of the start of the school year at Cornerstone Middle School had faded like the heat of summer into the cool fall. Most of the classes had settled into a boring routine, which didn’t help the students who were already feeling sleepy at their desks from the combination of the brisk air outdoors and the stifling heat indoors.

Shiloh had actually arrived at Ms. Sufferin’s homeroom class on time for a change. He took off his jacket, slung it over the back of the chair, and settled into his seat with his legs stretched out in the aisle.

He sent a text to his best friend Evan:

Why do they turn the heat up so high?

It feels like Florida in here.

    Evan texted back:

Have you ever been to Florida?

    Shiloh sent back another text.

    No.

    Evan texted back:

Then how do you know what Florida feels like?

    Shiloh texted back:

Everyone knows it’s hot there, and humid too.

Besides, one of my dad’s brothers lives there and

    he’s always complaining.

    Evan texted again:

Meet me after homeroom at our lockers.

Got to tell you about something I heard.

Shiloh was just about to send another note to Evan when all of sudden he felt the presence of Ms. Sufferin hovering above him like a dark raven.

I see you that you think we all want to take a trip. Sir, will you please get your huge clodhoppers out of the aisle? she said.

Clodhoppers? A trip? Shiloh looked at her quizzically. As usual he didn’t understand half of what Ms. Sufferin was talking about.

When he didn’t move fast enough, she whipped out her pointer, extended it, and then slapped it on the side of one of his boots.

Your giant feet! Put them under your desk where they belong, said Ms. Sufferin. Otherwise some of us may trip over them. And if one of us does, you’ll be heading to the principal’s office.

Shiloh could hear his friend Desirae giggling from the back of the room. Desirae’s giggles sounded like happy bubbles popping so he knew it was her instead of one of the other girls. He hated sitting in the front of Ms. Sufferin’s homeroom. Ever since the first day of class when Ms. Sufferin made him switch seats and sit in the front because he had laughed at one of her odd phrases, he had been under her thumb. She was always on his case over something. He felt like he couldn’t even shift in his chair or burp without her noticing.

Ms. Sufferin was dressed in one of her usual depressing gray outfits which always matched her mood. Shiloh tried not to catch her eye, but was too late. She noticed his perusal of her outfit.

Do you like my outfit? I got it out of the discount bin at the penny store. Always a bargain, She said.

The penny store? There’s no such thing! Shiloh blurted out.

Are you calling me a liar! She practically shouted.

No, I mean. I can see that your dress probably cost you a penny. Shiloh tried to retract his earlier statement.

What does that mean? Ms. Sufferin didn’t let him off the hook.
