Love Isn’t Logical
––––––––
It was mid-morning on an ordinary Tuesday at Cornerstone Middle School. Shiloh hadn’t seen his best friend Evan for almost a week. Evan was home sick with a bad cold since the third week of January. Lots of kids seemed to get sick after the excitement of the holidays, but it was rare to be out for so long. School seemed strange to Shiloh without Evan being around. Everyone was bustling about, but somehow the halls seemed empty and Shiloh’s brain seemed glazed over. Nothing seemed different or fascinating. Shiloh could almost predict what everyone would say or do.
One day at recess, instead of going outdoors into the icy winter air to shoot some hoops, Shiloh decided to go down into Evan’s secret lab. The secret lab was hidden down in the abandoned basement of the school. Evan had set it up the previous summer when he was in summer school. He and Evan and their friend Desirae were the only ones who went down to the lab on a regular basis. Another friend of theirs, Roxy, had been down there once, but she couldn’t take the vinegary smell from Evan’s biology experiments so she hadn’t come back. Even the teachers and the principal didn’t know about it. The three friends were hoping to keep it that way.
During the Christmas season, Shiloh, Evan and Desirae had decorated the lab and it had become Secret Santa’s workshop. Between the three of them they had fixed so many broken and unwanted toys and made them like new. They were able to give away hundreds of toys to needy kids. The three of them had loved every minute of it, but after the holiday was over they thought it was best to shut down the colorful indoor lights. They didn’t want the school’s electric bill to become so high that someone started asking questions, especially if that someone was Ms. Sufferin.
Shiloh wandered down to the basement, making sure that no one was following him. When he got to the end of the empty hallway, he pushed open the heavy door and went down the winding staircase. The door used to say, Staff only,
but the S
was worn off and so was the cross mark on the t.
It made it seem like the sign said laff only.
Even though Shiloh had seen this door a thousand times, it always made him smile.
The stairs creaked under his feet as he pushed open the door to the secret lab. The lab seemed stuffy. Evan hadn’t been there for over a week and some of the cobwebs hanging from the ceiling lights had gotten quite large. For a few seconds, Shiloh thought about getting a broom and cleaning up, but then he thought about what would happen if he disturbed any spiders.
Nope, he thought. He was going to leave them alone.
Instead, he sat on one of the metal stools and took out his phone. He sent a text to Evan.
Hey, Evan. Are you feeling any better?
Are you really sick or are you just
catching up on Netflix?
Normally, Evan wrote back within a few seconds, but there was no reply. Then, Shiloh heard a noise in the hallway.
Oh no! He thought to himself. Who could that be? I hope it’s not one of the teachers or the janitors. The footsteps got closer and closer to the door. He went by the door and hid. If whoever it was opened the door he would be hidden
