Shiloh, don’t make me come upstairs! Time to get up now! Shiloh’s mom yelled.

Shiloh turned to see what the time was. He had hit snooze over and over again for the past 30 minutes. Oh no! I can’t believe it! I’m gonna be late for homeroom again, Shiloh thought to himself. The autumn season always seemed like this. It was cold in the mornings and Shiloh found himself buried under the covers even though his mom had called him for breakfast three times. She usually called him with a sweet voice the first time and brisk, but still pleasant, the second time. However, on the third time she morphed into a drill sergeant.

Shiloh dragged himself up and stumbled out of bed with the blanket wrapped around his legs. His dog, Shadow, a curly haired black Goldendoodle, ran into the room and barked around his covered feet. Even Shadow knew he was late and seemed panicky.

He hurriedly threw on some clothes while trying to get his books and iPad in his backpack. He almost ran out of the room but took a second to breathe in his hands to smell his breath. Ew, morning breath! Shiloh thought. He dropped his book bag and ran to his bathroom to quickly pass his toothbrush with a glob of minty toothpaste over his teeth.

When he got downstairs, his mom said, I had breakfast ready an hour ago. We have to go so I’ll wrap it up in this baggie. The scrambled eggs and hash browns, which still smelled half good, looked limp, cold, and inedible.

Sorry, Mom. I should have gotten up earlier. If I don’t go now, Ms. Sufferin is going to have my head! Shiloh said. Where’s Shasha? We should give her this, umm...yummy meal.

Your sister left for school already, said Shiloh’s dad. Apparently she knows the proper way to use an alarm clock. His dad was reading an article online but stopped to peer over the top of his laptop to give Shiloh a stern look.

And besides, your sister ate already, said Shiloh’s mom as she rolled her eyes at Shiloh’s attempt to make the food seem more appetizing.

Maybe I can take a toaster danish or two with me, said Shiloh as he started opening up cabinets.

Toaster danish! Those things are filled with fake chemicals. Your mom takes the time to fix you a healthy, home-cooked breakfast and you choose to fill your stomach with artificial flavors. Kids these days! exclaimed Shiloh’s dad, but while his eyes were glued to the laptop, Shiloh’s mom motioned to him. She’d found a granola bar and quickly unzipped Shiloh’s backpack and snuck it in before Shiloh’s dad noticed. She and Shiloh shared a conspiratorial smile.

Any chance I can get a lift? said Shiloh. It was 7:35 and homeroom started at 8:00 a.m. sharp. Ms. Sufferin was one of the strictest teachers at Cornerstone Middle School and there were severe penalties for late arrivals. Shiloh shuddered at the thought of enduring one of Ms. Sufferin’s punishments.

I wish I could but I have to get to work, his mom said. You should have woken up earlier. Now you’ll have to face the consequences.

What about you, Dad? asked Shiloh in his best you-love-your-son-don’t-you voice.

Sorry, kiddo. No can do. I have to meet a client at the office in 15 minutes, said his
