    ACKNOWLEDGMENTS

No man is an island, and no one stands where he is due solely to his own efforts. I am grateful for the tutelage of many great masters in many fields, and they are too many to recall in this space. I wish to single out, however, a few significant names.

I would like to express my gratitude for the coaching and instruction of Mike Koenigs, Ed Rush, and Pam Hendrickson, without whom I would not have accomplished what I set out to do. I am grateful for the inspiration and friendship afforded me by my close friend and client, Frank Leyes, who has helped me learn more lessons than I might care to admit.

I am forever in the debt of my best friend, business partner, and brother in Christ, John Riding, whose untimely passing forced me to move forward in his absence. John, your leadership and friendship have brought me to this place. I am also indebted to his wife, Leicia, whose kindness and support have been a great comfort.

I am grateful for the support, patience, and tolerance of my team at Ignite Press, who continue to make me look better than I deserve. For Malia Sexton, Publishing Coordinator, for Kyle Relph, Videographer and A/V Engineer, for Samantha Maxwell, Chief Editor, and especially for Karen O’Keefe, my Bookkeeper and mother.

I could do nothing without the ongoing support of my family and especially my dear wife, Carrie, who has continued to have confidence in my crazy entrepreneurial notions. And I am grateful for my children, Connor, Claire, and Kyle, who have continued to look up to me even when I did not deserve it.

Finally and ultimately, I am grateful for my Savior, without whom I would receive what I actually deserve.

What People Are Saying About Ignite Press

    Endnotes

    Preface

I suspect three types of people will read this book. See if you fall into one of these categories:

You are early in your current field, and you are motivated to build your business or brand far more rapidly than your competition. You understand that being perceived as an expert in your field would make a huge difference in the trajectory of your business.

You have an established business, but you know you could dramatically improve your business given the proper tools and strategies. You recognize the value of differentiation and what this could mean for your future.

You have already built a thriving business, and you want to use the next period to pass on your knowledge to others, to leave an impact on those around you. You are getting ready to make a transition and recognize that you have a message you would like to share with the world.

Well, I said three types, but there really is a fourth type of person with whom I regularly work:

You have learned a great deal in your life, and you want to leave a legacy for those around you. You are less concerned about making money and more concerned about sharing your message with the world. For you, it is all about impact and legacy.

Do you see yourself in one of these four descriptions? I have worked with all four types to help them become authors. In fact, I have helped them become Amazon #1 bestselling authors. If you are so inclined, I can do the same for you!

In fact, if you suspect you would benefit from having a book, feel free to reach out to me right now. I would be happy to meet with you briefly via phone or video conference to discuss your situation. You can visit https://IgnitePress.us to schedule a complimentary book consultation.

Don’t know what you would write? We can discuss your desired outcome and your target market first and then determine the best topic for your book. Our proven writing process makes book creation both rapid and successful.

    Now let’s get busy!

    Introduction

In March of 2013, I had a number of new experiences. I wrote my first book, The Video Tractor Beam. I also published my first book. And for the first time in my life, I saw my name online next to some of the biggest names in publishing.

I remember the morning I first saw my name on Amazon. I had submitted all my book files to Amazon some time before. Ever since, I had been searching Amazon for my name, hoping to discover myself there. And then, it happened. I wrote my name in the search bar, hit enter, and was greeted with one of the most memorable sights I will ever encounter online.

There, below the orange Amazon logo, was the striking blue cover of The Video Tractor Beam. Next to that was my name. My heart leapt. Although I had done all the work to make this happen, it still seemed incomprehensible that my name and my book would be present on the world’s largest online book store.

Let me help you understand what this feels like.

Imagine for a moment you are at an event. Perhaps it is a wedding or an awards banquet, and they are showing a slideshow or video montage. What do you do? You automatically start searching for people you recognize in the video. More than that, you probably start looking for yourself. That’s normal; you are hardwired to do this. When you finally see yourself, what feeling goes through your mind? You might tell me you are embarrassed about some perceived flaw you think you have. You might feel a bit uncomfortable because of your pose or your attire. But if you are honest with yourself, I imagine you also feel some sense of pride that you are included in the presentation. Your search to find yourself there has ended successfully, and you find yourself encouraged and pleased.

Take that feeling and multiply it times a million!

Seeing your name, book cover, and your image on Amazon for the first time is an exquisite experience. For most people, there is a simultaneous feeling of joy and accomplishment, along with a swelling of pride. And this isn’t the ugly pride that says, I am better than everyone else or above everyone else. It is the pride of having done something both difficult and rare: the good kind of pride.

Now back to my story. This feeling of pride, this sense of accomplishment, was just the beginning of a series of pleasant and powerful surprises. More were to unfold as we launched the book.

In the days leading up to our book launch, my co-author and I worked hard to get the word out among friends and family. We basically asked everyone we knew, or even used to know, to buy our book. We made phone calls, sent emails, made Facebook posts, and more, all designed to help our book became a bestseller for a time.

When launch day arrived and people started buying our book, we had a bit of a gut check. For several hours, though we knew people were buying, we saw no movement on Amazon. Our book wasn’t moving at all. But as the day progressed, it started to creep up the rankings. Suddenly, it appeared in the top 100 books in Small Business Marketing. And then it entered the top 100 in Entrepreneurship!

This is when the second great surprise occurred.

We started seeing our book, and more importantly, our names, on the same page with some of our favorite authors. I am a huge Andy Andrews fan. (If you have not read The Traveler’s Gift, make that the next book you read after this one!) My book and my name shared the page with Andy Andrews! I have long admired the mission and marketing savvy of Dave Ramsey, the training of John Maxwell, the wisdom of Napoleon Hill, and the research and insight of Malcolm Gladwell—and I was on the same page with all of these titans.

I was blown away. Never in my life would I have expected to be featured alongside authors such as these.

    But it gets better!

Late in the day, our book started to creep up. Soon, we were right under these names. And then, we were above them! By the end of the day, our book was the #1 book in both of our categories and beat out books by Andrews, Ramsey, Maxwell, Gladwell, and even Napoleon Hill. I would have never imagined it, but my name was featured above many of my very favorite authors!

I am not sure I can explain how good this felt. I was shocked. And I was proud. I think I felt like I had won the lottery.

Here is where the most unexpected benefit occurred. As wonderful as I felt seeing my name associated with authors I respect so greatly, this feeling would only last so long. The surprise and joy faded, as they always do, no matter how great the experience. But something deeper remained.

Seeing my name next to (and above!) these authors left a lasting and unexpected impression in my mind. Glimpsing my book atop the list of bestsellers did too. Though I never planned this, I mentally started to take ownership of my accomplishment. I was an author! I was a bestselling author! And my book, if only for a moment, was selling faster than all of these accomplished authors.

This was a transformative moment in my business and personal life. And it was something for which I was completely unprepared. What I never expected was the impact of my book on my internal dialogue. My accomplishment affected my mental posture and confidence. These changes, in turn, affected how I approached prospects and clients. While I did not recognize any severe lack of confidence before publishing my book, the release and launch of The Video Tractor Beam gave me not just an external appearance of authority but also an internal gravitas that has since impacted many aspects of my life.

And this is only the beginning. As you will learn in the coming pages, a book has many powers. Some are subtle while others are overpowering. Some are predictable while others are wondrous and surprising. All of them together form something quite unique.

For this is The Power of the Published.

SECTION I: What Can a Book Do for Me?

A few years ago, I found myself on a flight back from Virginia, where I had facilitated a mastermind event for a client. An elderly gentleman was sitting next to me. Though casually dressed, he wore a Tommy Bahama shirt and a watch that looked suspiciously like a Rolex. After the plane took off, we introduced ourselves, and I asked him what
