stylist’s editorial director lisa smosarski shares her career wisdom

I landed my first management job at the age of 25, as editor of the former pop bible . The office was like no other – an average week would see the likes of Mark Owen singing his new song at my desk, or a cover shoot involving a boyband member getting himself into a precarious situation. (The most harrowing of theseof 20 smart, ambitious extroverts – often as the youngest person in the room. Two decades, three editorships and hundreds of direct reports later, I can confirm that I was absolutely winging it. I made many mistakes, but my goodness, did I learn – proper hands-on, squirm-in-your-seat learning. That’s what this new column is going to be all about – I’ll be sharing tried-and-tested advice from my own career and the new ways of thinking that I’m exposed to every day.
