    Introduction

The thief does not come except to steal, and to kill, and to destroy. I have come that they may have life, and that they may have it more abundantly. (John 10:10)

This book is a reality check into the existence of the ruler of darkness. Even though Jesus Himself has warned us of his existence, believers and unbelievers alike have been complacent—complacent in recognizing him and taking authority over him. Today we have generations of people who are unsure whether the devil even exists. This uncertainty has given him unprecedented access into people’s lives and the affairs of the world.

The devil’s favorite attacks are personal, which he hopes will produce a domino effect. In ministry, it has saddened me to see so many people living frustrated lives. People are unaware that the devil is controlling, or at the very least attempting to influence, their lives.

Everyone needs to come to the realization that the devil is the enemy. He is the cause, catalyst, and reason for every bad thing that happens on this earth. If we could trace every problem or disaster back to its source, we would ultimately end up at the devil. This book reveals and unravels this being called the devil, taking a look at his past, present, and future.

If you’re a believer, you have a place over him. Once you recognize your power and authority over his works and deceptions, life changes. The Bible says in 2 Corinthians 2:11 that we have an advantage over the devil because we know his strategies. Don’t settle for a second-rate life. Begin to take authority!

…for we are not ignorant of his devices.

    (2 Corinthians 2:11)

    Chapter One

    The Battle of the Ages

We have a chronicle of a battle that took place long ago in history, beginning even before mankind’s time on the earth. In fact, this battle is still ongoing today, albeit in a much smaller capacity because of what God accomplished through Jesus, His only begotten Son. This battle has continued throughout history and will continue into the future.

Battles between countries, governments, and businesses are often portrayed as the battle of all battles. You might even see a movie or read a book that claims to depict the battle of the ages. However, there never will be a larger battle than the one that’s going on between light and darkness, between good and evil, between morality and immorality.

    Light vs. Darkness

Jesus is the kingdom of light and the devil is the kingdom of darkness. There are people who think the devil doesn’t exist. On the opposite end, there are also people who think the devil is so powerful that humans are powerless against him.

Simply stated, darkness, immorality, and greed are trademarks of his existence today, and these trademarks exist in people who have been deceived by the devil. This deception produces wickedness, which is his plan. Wherever people refuse to believe in God and accept that sin is real, evil exists.

The Bible corroborates the fact that the devil exists and that he is operative. Scripture validates his power to work in an unbeliever’s life more than in a believer’s life. Jesus came to set people free from his strongholds, but people need to accept the offer.

Through Jesus, we can see that the devil has been constrained in the lives of believers, but he is not inoperative towards them. The devil still carries with him the ability to deceive. I say this to address Christian believers who might think the devil has been immobilized. This cannot be confirmed anywhere in the Bible. Scripture refers to an enemy who will be totally removed, but only in the future. Today he operates in a limited capacity, offering people an opposing kingdom to God’s. The choice is a personal one and has nothing to do with culture or ideology. Each person must look within themselves and choose. If you side with God, you already have an advantage over the devil. The Bible reveals that if any person seeks God, He will reveal Himself to them.

Then you will call upon Me and go and pray to Me, and I will listen to you. And you will seek Me and find Me, when you search for Me with all your heart. (Jeremiah 29:12–13)

    Defeated But Not Deceased

Christians need to know that the devil is defeated, but not deceased. The devil is conquered, but not inoperative. The devil has been beaten, but he’s not locked up in prison somewhere. He will be confined in a prison called the lake of fire—in the future. He won’t be relegated there until the Church Age has been completed. In other words, not until Christ has finished working in us the Great Commission.

Very simply, the Great Commission is for us to make disciples. Every person fulfills that assignment differently. Our assignments will take place in our towns and cities, countries and nations, anywhere Christ might send us. When this is complete in God’s eyes, the devil will be cast into his final place.

The devil, who deceived them, was cast into the lake of fire and brimstone where the beast and the false prophet are. And they will be tormented day and night forever and ever. (Revelation 20:10)

Why Does He Still Have Influence?

God will not completely remove the devil before his time, because that would remove our ability to choose. If people have no choices to make, they become robotic, machine-like, carrying out mechanical tasks on the earth and then going on to heaven as unemotional beings.

It was not God’s intention to create cold, robotic people. God’s intention was for each and every person to be creative, remarkable, and unique. The true family of God is made up of individuals who can make choices and accomplish noteworthy feats.

God said at the beginning of time that we were to be like Him in this area:

Then God said, "Let Us make man in Our image, according to Our likeness; let them have dominion over the fish of the sea, over the birds of the air, and over the cattle, over all the earth and over every creeping thing that creeps on the earth." So God created man in His own image; in the image of God He created him; male and female He created them. (Genesis 1:26–27, emphasis added)

This is God’s intention. We can see from this scripture that His likeness is to create and bring into being. His nature is revealed in His act of creating heaven and earth. We won’t create new heavens or planets, nor will we create something out of nothing on this earth. Only God can create a tree, an animal, or a star. However, we have dominion over what God has created here. Our role is to take dominion of it and design and discover things, a role that will last throughout eternity.

It’s difficult to understand God’s desire for a family, because He’s so all-encompassing. However, God’s desire must be similar to each person’s desire to belong, because we were created to be like Him. The desire for each and every one of us to be part of a family comes from Him. Every family, every group, every gang stems from this desire inside us to belong to something.

God sent Jesus in order to make this desire a reality. Jesus had to demolish the devil’s power and influence on people.

    Make No Mistake

Make no mistake about it: I believe that Jesus accomplished His mission on earth to destroy the devil’s power, as explained in 1 John 3:8, I believe that the devil and his establishment are a defeated enemy. In this passage, notice that Jesus
