Devil May Care - Dimetri Wittaker
Chapter One
S o, got any plans for tonight?
Joey Adams regarded the source of the voice with his signature neutral apathy. Seeing it was a coworker at the store Joey glanced at her named tag, which read Becky
, before answering.
Yep, I've got a hot date with my recliner and a ribeye steak. It's gonna be a wild one,
Joey replied with a smile touching the corner of his mouth.
What?! That’s so lame! You’re young, you need to go out and have some real fun!
Joey’s neutral apathy turned to slight distaste. The man yawned into his hand then turned to the burnette.
"No offense, Becky, but I don't remember asking for your opinion on the matter," the tone of the words were kept level but she still felt the sting of them. The woman kept working silently until she could excuse herself to another part of the store.
Joey felt bad for all of three seconds before forgetting the whole conversation and getting back to work. He knew he wasn't the most interesting human being, but pointing that out was just rude. Of course, I'm not one to talk about rudeness, Joey thought to himself as he worked to stock his aisle with enough cans of chicken soup for the cold season to arrive.

It's cold out there!
everyone of them would remark, without fail. Joey always had to bite back a No shit, Sherlock
and instead gave the customer an uncaring Yes
before ringing up the rest of their items.
Joey finished off his aisle and walked into the back to clock out and head home. The man glance down the hall and saw the new girl, Becky, and thought about apologizing. He had been a little rude himself after all, but ultimately decided against it. Becky had been working there for a month and should know by now his reputation that he didn't talk to people if he didn't have to.
Work is work, no need to turn it into a social club, Joey thought to himself, besides, it's my job to stock shit, attend to customers and clean. Not entertain idiot coworkers who push their ideal of a fun weekend night.
Silently, Joey punched out and headed home. The drive home was quiet just like most of Joey’s life, it was five minutes of complete silence before he even
