CHAPTER ONE
As the sun set one cool evening in May, Kathy sat in her rocker on the front porch. A glass of lemonade sat on the table beside her, as did the telephone. She was the only one home. There was only one light on in the house, illuminating the porch where she sat, giving her enough light to read the latest best seller. She could hear the low melody emanating from the radio inside. It was the local Oldies station playing their version of the Back-Seat Memories.
She closed the book and placed it on her lap, then rocked. She stared into the sunset with a far-off look in her eyes as the song ‘You Don’t Know Me’ began to play on the radio.
The song reminded her of the night thirty years before, the song that was playing the first time she danced with him. This was the night that was burned into her memory, the night she met Joe.
The year was 1968 and it was Saturday night, but not an average Saturday night for Kathy. She worked hard all day at her new apartment, and she needed time away.
She decided to shower and put on an old stand-by skirt and blouse, then visit a neighborhood club for a drink.
She was glad she remembered to bring her jacket. It was the first week of spring, and the sky was clear with stars and the moon shining brightly. The night air was a bit nippy, though, reminding her of the recent winter. The winter had been cold, seasonally and personally.
Kathy stood by the jukebox listening to the music from the band and looked at the all-to-familiar scene. Most men were openly trying to pick up women. The discrete ones were probably married. The women, in turn,
