    INTRODUCTION

Many employees that work in the healthcare profession would agree that the pressure from their administration to focus on patient satisfaction can be stressful enough to make their stomach churn. When a patient or family member is dissatisfied the administration will often attempt to rectify the situation by insinuating that the employee has somehow fallen short in carrying out their duties in order to appease the patient or family, even if that may not be completely truthful.

A dysfunctional organizational culture, conflict between co-workers and distrust between management and staff can cause nurses to feel unsupported and lead to even more workplace stress. On the other hand, nurses may excel at work, but suffer from conflicting home and family demands that exhaust their time, energy and focus at work.

People depend on nurses to take care of them. And it is important for nurses to make taking care of themselves a priority in order for them to adequately take care of their patients, family, and friends. Workplace stress impairs the ability to function on the job, and to enjoy life outside of work.

Nurses face many stressful issues in the workplace, which may ultimately lead to what is known as burnout. Everyone is susceptible to burnout, no matter their line of work. Being in this state can have severe effects on a person’s quality of life, both in and out of work. In some severe cases, burnout may lead to resignation, as professionals struggle to free themselves from emotional exhaustion.

Nurse burnout is a physical, mental, and emotional state caused by being chronically overworked and a lack of job satisfaction and support. The most common symptoms of burnout may include fatigue, emotional exhaustion, targeting co-workers with job-related cynicism and a low sense of accomplishment. This does not just improve on its own, if left untreated burnout can lead to clinical depression, as the symptoms compound over time.

The most important thing is to recognize symptoms early, before they become overwhelming. Regardless of how minor the warning signs may seem to be, it is crucial to listen to your body and mind. Every healthcare professional should be familiar with burnout symptoms, and should be prepared to acknowledge and deal with them quickly.

Such as irritability, it is a common human emotion, but excessive negative mood swings in the workplace can be another early sign of burnout, along with constantly feeling exhausted, even on days off. Stress can be reduced by keeping professional life and home life separate, not dwelling on work issues at home helps to allow relaxation while off duty.
