Author

Cate Ellink

Cate Ellink became intrigued by the erotic when her grandfather used to pass books to her father saying, "Don't let the girls read page X." Although her mother and sisters never bothered to chase those pages, Cate always did. Invariably, her imagination was better than what she read. While pursuing a career in science, Cate amused herself by writing about ordinary events and giving them an erotic twist. It's taken more than a few years to bravely expose her mind to the public. While the events in her stories may have occurred, it's highly likely that her imagination is far more exciting than the reality. Cate lives near the beach in NSW with her long-suffering husband. This is Cate's first novella. She has two short stories published.

    ACKNOWLEDGMENTS

A book is never a solo journey—well, mine certainly aren’t.

    Special thanks to -

Mum and Dad who taught me to love reading and encouraged my imagination.

Stephan, who believed I could write long before I did. Thank you for reading, challenging me and encouraging me endlessly.

The Romance Writers of Australia. Without this group of generous, supportive, amazing women, and men, I’d still be thinking I’d like to write a book one day.

My critique partners, Mervet, Judy and Sandra, who’ve been on the journey from the start.

Anne Gracie, Bronwyn Jameson and the Romance Intensive workshop that taught me I needed to learn a hell of a lot.

Anita Joy, Ainslie Paton, Anthea Laurelton, Sheridan Kent, Kaliana Cole, Mel Teshco, Tracey O’Hara, Angela Castle and Jess Dee for reading drafts and giving great suggestions.

The Hot Down Under girls - Tracie Sommers, Mel Teshco, Kasey Channing, Kylie Scott, Rhyll Biest, Rhian Cahill, SE Gilchrist, Marianne Theresa, CT Green, Keziah Hill, Shona Husk, Beverley Oakley, and Lexxie Couper - for this journey. Tracie and Mel, extra special thanks for taking a crazy idea and running with it.

Joel, a brave man who took us on, and Momentum.

Editor extraordinaire, Sarah, who polished waffly sentences and deleted (more) repetition.

My friends, Marg, Joy and Helen.

My sisters, their families and my extended family.

My best mates, E and T, who dragged me from the computer begging for their walks.

My husband, the writing-widow, who supports my insane dreams and smiles tolerantly when I’m sure he’d often rather groan.

Australian Romance Readers Association for their continued support of Aussie romance writers.

Patti Roberts, Paradox Book Cover Design and Formatting, created the most gorgeous cover for this book that inspired me to get it finished. And then assisted with all I needed to do!

Diane Cassar, Ainslie Paton, Kim Petersen and Jennie Jones for reading the updated version of this story.

    Part 1

Esquire: When we meet what would you like to do?

When we meet? My heart skips a beat before accelerating to warp speed. He wants to meet me? My hands sweat and my vision is fuzzy. It’s hard to see the screen, much less find the keys to type back to him.

We don’t phone or Skype or anything else. We chat. Words. That’s us. I’m happy with words, with faceless anonymity.

Condamine: How did we get to meeting? I thought this was just online fun.

Esquire: Don’t you want to meet? Aren’t you curious to see if what we have on here exists irl?

In real life. Goose bumps slide down my arms. Oh my God. If what we have online exists in real life, I’ll sizzle into a wisp of smoke, never to be heard from again. Since the first moment he spoke to me in this chat room ten months ago, our friendship’s been a conflagration. I burn with need every time I chat with this man—if he is a man. What we have couldn’t possibly exist like this in real life. And yet, curiosity niggles.

Condamine: This could never exist irl.

    Esquire: Why not?

Condamine: I’m much shyer irl. I would never tell you the things i have.

Esquire: But I already know. I already know you. Think how good it could be.

I don’t want to think how good it could be. When I do, my stomach churns and my head hurts, so I take the easy way out and redirect the conversation to the mundane. Work is common ground. We both work in labs. Talking with someone who understands the pressure, the skills, the techniques is the best debrief. We laugh about eccentric colleagues with their strict routines and odd habits. We talk about life.

The minutes turn to hours. It’s late and we both have to sleep.

After our goodnights, I see the words Esquire signs out and the tension that usually snaps when he signs out doesn’t. My nipples remain so tight they throb. Squirming in the computer chair in my draughty lounge room doesn’t help the moisture pooling between my thighs. How does he do this to me? I step outside the old rented farmhouse into the hectares of silence and stare up at the star-laden sky.

He knows me better than anyone. We have shared so much—our deepest secrets, darkest fantasies, greatest fears and loftiest dreams. It’s the same as having a real-life friend in that we open up to each other, but this connection is stronger because the anonymity and lack of physical contact allows complete openness. No judgements, no shock. Sharing everything freely.

What if it was as good in real life? What if whatever burned between us online was the same face to face? Would I be able to survive that intensity?

    Could I survive not knowing?

Weekends we don’t chat. It’s been our pact since we first met to ensure that we stay grounded in reality—although that seems to be slipping. This weekend makes for two days of total frustration where my mind constantly churns in circles. I should meet him. I shouldn’t. I’m distracted. There’s a knot in my
