Chapter 1

Where do I begin?

I twist my hair around my index finger. Something I always do when I’m in an awkward situation.

Start at the point where you feel most comfortable.

I bring my legs up under my body. The therapist told me to get as comfortable as I like.

This position reminds me of childhood, of being safe…watching TV.

I think of my parents and I blush.

You know it’s not that I need counseling, but it’s just I have to tell someone about what happened.

I understand that. Just go ahead.

I could blame the dead-end job but that was only part of it.

I begin to bite my nails.

I don’t think you’re quite ready to do this, the therapist tells me.

She’s right.

Why don’t you lie here on the couch, I’ll put on some music, and you can relax for about 30 minutes. Get your thoughts together and then we’ll begin our session.

Session, that word now has a different meaning for me.

She hands me a blanket, I slide down on the couch as the sound of classical music softly fills the room.

I’ll be back shortly.

I hear the door close and I pull the blanket over me.

If I hadn’t gone into that coffee shop that morning to get my boss’ morning fix, I wouldn’t have overheard the conversation. Strange how fate takes you in a direction you’d never thought you’d go…
