The King Has One More Move

"Checkmate"

Several years ago, I found a sermon on youtube by a preacher entitled "The King has One More Move."

If you don't know the story, there is a painting that at one time, was held at the Louvre in Paris, originally titled Die Schachspieler "The Chess Players," also known as "Checkmate," by the artist Friedrich Moritz August Retzsch(1779-1857).

​The Painting

The painting depicts Satan playing chess vs. a human; appearing, as if Satan has won, declaring "Checkmate." One version of the story follows that a legendary late 1800's American chess champion, Paul Morphy, happened to see the painting at a museum and noticed that it was in fact, not "Checkmate." The King had one more move...

The Lesson

Since then, I have remembered that lesson. The King of all kings, Jesus Christ, always has one more move in our lives.

Satan never has us checkmated. Satan is the ultimate deceiver though. He is capable of completely convincing you that he does have you checkmated in life, but actually, he doesn't. Satan is the loser. God is the winner.

 Victory

Jesus Christ has already claimed the victory for us. He has already claimed the victory against Satan. We just have to receive it by receiving Jesus as our Lord and Savior. 

Satan vs. God

They aren't even on the same level.

Michael the Archangel, threw Satan out of Heaven and will eventually cast him into the lake of fire for eternity after the Millennium.

Jesus Christ did one better than just winning though...

God Details His Moves in Advance

He gave us all of His moves in the Bible in advance! All of God's prophecies in the Bible have been realized up to this point.

All of His future prophecies that we will watch play out, will happen! Satan already knows all of His moves; yet, has been unable to do anything to stop God.

The Grand Chessboard of Life

God tells us about the positioning of the pieces on the chessboard and what moves He'll make and when.

Now we get to watch it all play out, already knowing the results! It's an exciting time to be alive as a Christian.

Chapter 1:

The Garden of Eden

Satan’s first move against humans.

Satan first tempts Eve at the Garden of Eden to get Adam and Eve kicked out of the Garden of Eden so they lose out on living forever, beginning original sin in humans.

Most everyone knows the story of Adam and Eve in the Book of Genesis of the Holy Bible, the first two humans and the origin of original sin. God placed Adam in the Garden of Eden located near Jerusalem and told him to take care of the land. He instructed Adam that he could eat from any tree in the garden except the tree of knowledge of good and evil or he would die.

God then said it was not good for man to be alone so he caused Adam to go into a deep sleep, took one of his ribs and made woman, Eve, as his wife.

Satan took the form of a serpent and tempted Eve in the Garden of Eden to eat of the tree of knowledge of good and evil. She ate the fruit and handed it to Adam who also ate the fruit. God banished them from the Garden of Eden and they also lost the ability to eat from the tree of life. They would not be able to live forever as intended.

The Lord blocked the entrance to the Garden of Eden.

Genesis 3:24

24 After he drove the man out, he placed on the east side of the Garden of Eden cherubim and a flaming sword flashing back and forth to guard the way to the tree of life.

God’s Response

He kicks Adam and Eve out of the Garden of Eden and now they will have to die. No humans who live after them will have the opportunity of living forever at this point. The Garden of Eden has been blocked. Nobody will be able to eat from the tree of life.

This looks like a victory for Satan here if you’re not looking at the big picture. Let’s see what big events happen next...

Chapter 2:

Noah’s Ark

Genesis 6:13

13 So God said to Noah, "I am going to put an end to all people, for the earth is filled with violence because of them. I am surely going to destroy both them and the earth.

This doesn’t look like a great start either! From Adam and Eve, mans’ sin progresses to the point where God simply says he is going to destroy everyone!

Noah

Adam lived to 930 years old and Noah was born around 1056. So Noah was born around 126 years after Adam died. When Noah was 500 years old he had 3 sons Shem, Ham and Japheth.

In Genesis 6 of the Old Testament of the Holy Bible, God instructs Noah to build an Ark, because He is going to destroy all of humanity except Noah’s family by way of flood.

The Ark and the Flood

Noah builds the Ark and surely enough, when Noah was 600 years old the great flood hit the earth just as God had foretold. Only Noah, his wife, sons, and their wives, along with the animals they brought onboard the ark were saved.
