ABOUT THE AUTHOR
PREFACE
To many, even mentioning the subject of spiritual warfare can cause all types of fearful and hesitant thoughts. Much of this is due to the extremes that have been seen in regard to this subject. It’s true there’s been fanaticism involved when dealing with this issue, but that should not cause us to reject or neglect the validity of this area of biblical truth.
The Bible clearly instructs us we wrestle not against flesh and blood, but against principalities, against powers, against the rulers of the darkness of this age, against spiritual hosts of wickedness in the heavenly places
(Eph.6:12). If we intend to continue in our walk with God, we must at some point face the reality of this conflict Paul speaks of.
My desire in writing on this subject is to present as balanced a treatment of these truths as I can given the limits of my own experience and understanding, and they are many.
In the pages that follow, I have dealt with how spiritual warfare fits into the overall picture of our lives in Christ. I have done this by applying our lives to the familiar pattern given us in the story of the Exodus. My desire is to provide help to those who may recognize themselves to be somewhere along this same path.
Likewise, I have dealt with some of the attributes and weapons we must be armed with in order to be truly victorious in the battles that lay ahead. And I have also focused directly on taking the land, as we engage ourselves in this process known as spiritual warfare.
The dates for the writing of this book range from the summer of 1986 to the spring of 1989.
PART ONE
Chapter One
Whatever Things Were Written Before
There is a tremendous unity in the book we call the Bible; both the Old and the New Testament. No other collection of writings has borne such a Divine stamp of approval as these. It has been said the New Testament can be found in the Old Testament hidden, and the Old Testament can be found in the New Testament explained, or revealed.
There are those today who have neglected the Old Testament in favor of the New, especially among those who are younger in their Christian faith. The reasons for this are many, but the results are always the same – we lose.
Paul wrote in his letter to the Roman church whatever things were written before was written for our learning, that we through the patience and comfort of the Scriptures might have hope
(Rom.15:4). He thoroughly understood the significance of the Old Testament Scriptures for the New Testament believers. He often reasoned with his unbelieving Jewish contemporaries out of their own Scriptures to convince them of who Christ was, and of the truth of His New Testament claims. Many of the teachings found in his epistles were based on nothing more than Old Testament passages explained in New Covenant understanding.
Paul also understood that the ways God dealt with those under the Old Covenant were often meant to act as illustrations for us who live under the New. To the Corinthian church he wrote, Now all these things happened unto them for examples: and they were written for our admonition, upon whom the ends of the world are come
(1Cor.10:11).
As we are given new eyes through regeneration and the renewal of the Holy Spirit, we can begin to see how many of the accounts of God’s dealing with His people then, have either direct or symbolic parallels to His dealings with us now. We find this clearly displayed in the Old Testament account of the Exodus of the children of Israel. His dealing with them as a nation closely parallels what many including myself find to be our own Christian experience. We’ve seen that just as the children of Israel had been under the cruel bondage of Pharaoh, we too had all our lives been under the heavy yoke of the enemy of souls himself. Pharaoh was a type of the real enslaver Satan, and his rule over us as unregenerates. But thank God He sent a Moses to deliver us. Through the shed blood of Jesus Christ, the doorposts of our hearts have been sprinkled, and the Death Angel had to pass over. Through many signs and wonders the Lord God served notice on the living forces that had enslaved us, and with a mighty outstretched arm He led us also out of the bondage of Egypt. Through the baptismal waters of the Red Sea we were buried, then raised into new life – cut off from all the entanglements of our old life in Egypt, leaving us to worship as we too looked back to see our enslavers dead on the seashore, while before us was the promise of a land of milk and honey.
What I write here is no new revelation, and I am not the first to refer to these parallels. On the contrary, volumes have been written concerning each of them. Some of history’s most renowned theologians have written extensively on these matters. These truths have been the meat of many sermons preached in the pulpits of our church congregations. We have been taught them in our Sunday school classrooms since our youth.
God in His wisdom dealt with them (the Israelites) in such a way that by His actions then, we might see a pattern for His dealing with us today. It is no wonder Paul wrote "Oh the depths of the riches both of the wisdom and knowledge of God. How unsearchable
