How to Play Spades - Tim Ander
Conclusion
Introduction
What is Spades?
Spades is a card game. It is a game which is played using a standard deck of cards. There are variations of the game, but it is generally played as a partnership or as solo players. Spades is a bidding game. The aim of the game is to take tricks. Players will begin by bidding and will then try to take at least the number of tricks which have been bid. With most trump-taking games, the trump is chosen at the beginning of the game either by the winning bidders or a card being turned face-up. With Spades (as the name would suggest), the trump suit is always spades. If players make there bid, then they are awarded points. There are also bonus points and penalties available. The players with the most points at the end of a match will be declared the winners.
History of Spades
Spades is a relatively new game. The game was invented in the 1930s and only began to grow in popularity during the 1940s. The United States is credited as the birthplace of the game and is a distant relative of both Whist and Contact Bridge. It is a trick-taking game, and any player who can play spades can learn other, and more complicated, trick-taking games (such as Bridge) relatively quickly.
It was during World War II that the soldiers from Cincinnati, Ohio (the birth city of Spades) brought the game to the masses. As Spades players were deployed to various military stations around the world, the game spread. Compared to other trick-taking games, Spades is simpler. This was in part, what led to the popularity of the game. As soldiers had leisure time, the ease of Spades made it a game which could be learned quickly and then played long into the night.
Trick-taking games were popular during the war, and a simple game like Spades was one which soldiers learned. It was also an easy game to interrupt and come back to (a valuable thing when you are a soldier). Other trick-taking games were not so easy to interrupt. Either was Poker (another game which was popular with soldiers. When the war was over, the game had been learned by a great many soldiers. When these soldiers returned home, they helped to spread the game across the world.
Spades is still popular in the United States. It is also popular in countries which had US soldiers deployed in them during the war. But, how do you play it?
