BLACKJACK
BLACKJACK
I begin with Blackjack for a very simple reason: The odds can be more favorable for the player than in any other game. In fact, there are those who think that anyone who does not select Blackjack as his or her specialty is a masochist. The game is simple to play, the rules are clear and understandable. Properly played, the odds can actually be turned to the player’s advantage.
I’ll start with a basic description of the game. Some authors indicate that if you already know the basics, you should skip over this section and go on to the next, but I disagree. Even if you already know how the game is played, or think you know, read this section. It can’t hurt and it might help. I will assume that you are entering a casino for the first time and want to try your luck at Blackjack.
Your first step is to find a table. Not just any table, but a table where the game is being played for stakes you can tolerate. It is quite embarrassing to rush up to a table, ask for $20 in chips, and then discover that the minimum bet at that table is $100.
You will usually find a small sign, to the dealer’s right or left, which will indicate the minimum and maximum allowable wagers at that table. If the sign is obscured by ashtrays and empty drinks, don’t hesitate to approach the dealer and inquire directly. Or, simply check the bets being made by the players. If all you see are green chips, it is probably a $25 table (the minimum bet is $25). If all you see are red chips, it is undoubtedly a $5 table. If you see silver dollars or silver dollar tokens, it could be a $1, $2, or $3 table. Assuming that you are a novice, you’ll want to start with low stakes; if your hotel/casino does not offer
