How to Play Blackjack - Kevin Gerard
Blackjack Fundamentals
Blackjack is among the most popular and exciting casino card games. With some of the best odds of any casino game, blackjack is one of the few games where a solid player has good odds of walking away a winner. With a friendly yet competitive atmosphere, blackjack offers a balance between the world of serious gambling in poker and world of completely chance-based roulette.
It’s also one of the world’s most elusive games in terms of where it came from and how it grew to be so popular. The origin of blackjack appears to lie in the French casinos of the 1700s, where it was called twenty one
, or vingt et un
, or even a Spanish game where the object was to reach 31 rather than 21. Some say it actually derives from a Roman game that was played with wooden blocks, but confirmation of this theory has never been found. No matter its origins, blackjack grew in popularity until the French colonists introduced it to North America, where it began to pick up followers in Nevada and eventually became one of the first games to appear in the casinos when the state made gambling legal in 1931.
The object of the game is to beat the dealer’s hand. You and every other person at the table are all playing against the dealer who represents the house. The goal is to have a hand of cards that equals 21, or comes as close to 21 as possible, without going over that score. A player wins by either getting blackjack, a two-card hand equaling 21, or getting a hand of cards higher than the dealer’s without exceeding 21. When players or dealers go over 21 it is called busting
and means you have lost. Note, however, that if the dealer has a blackjack, that hand wins automatically against anything except a player blackjack (if both a player and the dealer have a blackjack the result is a push,
neither a win nor a loss), and that any player who goes bust loses immediately even if the dealer also busts afterwards.
The value of each player’s hand is determined by adding the value of his or her cards together. Cards 2 through 10 are equal to the value they display while face cards
, Jack, King, and Queen, are each worth ten points. Aces can either be worth 1 or 11 points. The player chooses how they want to play their Ace according to the other cards in their hand. Hands that contain Aces counted as 11 are called soft
hands; this means that the hand can’t go bust on taking another card.
Before anyone receives a card, bets are placed on the table. If you are playing in a casino pay attention to the minimum buy in and bet amounts. Your buy in is the minimum amount you must spend in order to play at the table. The minimum bet is the lowest amount you can bet per hand. Once bets have been placed the dealer will give each player two cards face up, while giving himself or herself two cards but with only one face up. Based on the cards of the dealer and their own, each player must now decide whether they want to stay/stand (keep the cards they have) or hit (take additional cards). This is also the player’s opportunity to change their betting amount by either splitting pairs, doubling down, surrendering, or taking insurance, all of which will be discussed in detail later.
When all players have made their choices, the dealer will turn over his or her other card and then either take additional cards or stay. If you have a hand of cards that are higher than the dealer’s without going over 21, or the dealer busts (breaks 21) you win
