Win at Poker - Dennis R. Harrison
AMERICAN POKER
If you have absolutely no knowledge of how to play Poker, please purchase a book which will teach you the basics. It is not my intent in this chapter to help make you a great Poker player, or even a better Poker player. The purpose of this chapter is to explain the differences between how Poker is played in casinos versus how it is played in the normal, friendly (all right, sometimes maybe not so friendly) game you are accustomed to playing in New York, or Nebraska, or wherever you happen to live.
The best reason for playing Poker in a casino is that unlike the other casino games, you are not competing against the house. You are now testing your skill and luck against other people just like yourself. No one has you at a fixed percentage disadvantage.
Yet, even though my reason as stated above is true, I firmly believe that the real reason people enjoy Casino Style Poker is that it gives them a chance to test their skill against some of the best Poker players in the world. You are not playing against your Uncle Fred, who couldn’t care less if he loses, or your Aunt Mildred, who still can’t remember that she should not fold when all her cards are of the same suit, or your friend Jerry who can be bluffed consistently by anyone who raises more than a quarter. You will now be playing with people who, for the most part, really know how to play. Granted, I’ve seen players who couldn’t pass muster in a penny ante game, let alone a Vegas casino, but these folks are the exception and not the rule. Whether you decide to play in a $13 game, or a no limit
game, the vast majority of the players at your table will be better than the people you play against at home.
For years, I avoided playing Poker at the casinos because I had heard from a number of people that I would be fleeced immediately by the locals regardless of my level of skill. The local players, the story went, had played with each other for years, had developed
