Introduction

If you’re anything like I am, you might have avoided the craps table for a long time. When I first started playing at casinos, I would often be drawn to the noise and excitement of table. It seemed that was where all the action was – the shouting, the excitement, the buzz around the table. I would peer in excitedly and watch every roll, only to realize I had absolutely no idea what was going on. I would walk off and head over to the roulette or blackjack tables instead.

It was only after a couple of years that I decided I would investigate how to play the game properly. I wanted to play but at the same time I knew I shouldn’t be risking my money at a game where I had no clue what the best move was or even how the game worked. It took me a while to read up, but the next time I visited, I walked up to the table feeling a more confident and ready to play.

That was many years ago and I’ve played thousands and thousands of times since. Craps is not only a lot of fun to play, but it’s also one of the best games for the player. It has one of the lowest house edges in the casino. If you’re looking to play a game and give yourself one of the highest chances of winning, then craps is a good choice.

If you want to learn about craps and its strategies, odds, terminology, probabilities, etiquette and more, then this book is ideal for you. If, like me, you’ve previously kept away from the tables, then you will feel confident about getting involved once you’ve read this book.

One thing I won’t be saying though is that craps can be beaten. There is no system that exists that will overcome the house edge of the game, no matter what techniques or betting strategies you are presented with elsewhere. This book explains why that’s the case, but I want to make it clear that this is not one of those books that tries to sell you some kind of guaranteed win – that’s impossible.

What I will do is explain every aspect of the game from the beginning and teach you to become the best player you can be. The best players go to the table with a solid understanding of the rules of the game and the probabilities of the odds. They know about every part of the game. Armed with this knowledge they give themselves every possible chance of winning and walking away with a profit.

It’s not guaranteed of course, but in the short term it’s certainly possible to leave the casino in profit for the night. Over the following pages, you will understand why that’s possible, how to play the game properly and, just as importantly, the common mistakes to avoid.

Understanding how the game works

Before you play any game at a casino, you need to understand the rules, the objectives and the odds of the game. A lack of understanding of any of these elements is a shortcut to losing your entire bankroll. In this chapter you will learn how the game of craps works. The good news is that it’s not really as complicated as it might at first look.

How to play

Craps is a game played with two dice. The players take it in turn to roll the dice themselves on the craps table. Each roll can produce one of 36 possible results. The first roll of the game is known as the come out roll. This is more often just referred to as the come-out. The shooter is the player who has the dice and is just about to throw them down the table.

The results of this come-out roll determine if the game stops there or continues. If the roll results in a 2, 3, 7, 11 or 12 the game is over. The numbers 2, 3 and 12 are referred to as craps numbers. The numbers 7 or 11 are known as naturals.

If any other number is thrown, then this number is referred to as the point. This means a point number can be 4, 5, 6, 8, 9 or 10. If a point has been made, the game will carry on until one of
