    Chapter 1: What is Stress?

    In today’s world, stress can affect anyone, and it does not depend on the person's age, gender or the circumstance that one is in. Stress can lead to psychological and physical health issues.  So, what is stress exactly? Stress refers to the way of responding either physically, mentally or emotionally to any threat or demand. Any time your body senses danger, whether it is in your imagination or a real situation, the body defenses kick in with a rapid process that happens automatically. The way the body responds is known as the fight-or-flight response or the stress response. This kind of fast response helps you fight anything that is stressing you or, on the other hand, helps you to run away from such things.

    Once this type of reaction occurs, hormones are released to help your body adjust. Too much exposure to stress leads to adverse effects on your body. At times, a little worry is good for us because it is the body's way of protecting a person.  When fear is working correctly, it helps you stay energetic, alert, focused and, in case of emergencies, it can quickly be fundamental in saving your life.  For example, a specific type of stress commonly known as eustress is vital to our lives because it makes our lives more balanced and exciting.  Riding a roller coaster makes us feel active and alive whereas other stresses like chronic stress give us sleepless nights.

    When you are frightened by something, stress gives you extra strength to defend yourself from such threats. Stress also helps us to rise and meet our challenges or deadlines, therefore achieving our goals and objectives in life. For example, stress will sharpen your concentration if you are playing a win or lose game with a partner since you will not want to lose. Stress will also make you go and study for your forthcoming exams due to fear of failure instead of watching movies all day. Research shows that when stress becomes too much in our lives, it stops being helpful to the body causing significant damage to our health, productivity, moods and also the quality of our lives.

    Are you interested in knowing the science behind stress response or fight or flight response? Below is an overview of how it works.

    When a person's body senses danger, or when one has threatened the hypothalamus, which is a part located on the base of your brain, it reacts very fast. The reaction sends nerves and hormone signals to the adrenal glands, which release a lot of hormones, normally adrenaline and cortisol hormones. These two hormones are the ones that arouse the body for emergency action, prepare you to face any danger and also increase your survival chances. There is a production of adrenaline hormone, also called epinephrine whose main functions include;

    ●  Increases the person's heartbeat,

    ●  Makes it easier for
