Barbara Beagen majored in Liberal Arts in college; however her real education came from life itself. The Dance Of The Firefly - Barbara Beagen

    DEDICATION

This book is dedicated to my children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren: Tiffany, Hope, Brandy, Winston, Justice, Destiny, Ricky, Victoria (Torie), Xavier, Gabriel, Baylee, Peyton, Nevaeh, Pearce, Daniel, Aiyhonna and LayLuh.

Not only was it because of them that I was able to write this book, but also realize and remember that we are all born with a beautiful light inside of us. The light of the spirit: a spirit, which not only knows how to love unconditionally, but also knows how to spread its wings and dance through life. As we embark on our journey through life with all of its molding, shaping, expectations and conditions, our souls begin to build this paradigm that we seem to live in. It’s the building of this paradigm that will determine whether the light shines brightly or if it will become dull, dim, or just go out altogether—for the soul is the protector of the spirit.

    PREFACE

I once heard a very wise man give his recipe for love. He said it was a simple one, only comprising of four ingredients; but, for some odd reason, it seems to be very difficult for human beings to follow.

The four ingredients are: respect, understanding, consideration and compassion. In order to truly love someone or something, you must have respect for them or it. Without respect, you could never have the second ingredient, which is understanding. If you do not understand something or someone, you will not possess the third ingredient, consideration. And without consideration, the fourth ingredient, compassion, will be missing. We must all learn to have compassion, whether it be for the human world, animal world, plant world, or insect world —for there are many worlds within ours.

He then went on to explain that, without all four, you can never really attain the purest form of love, which is unconditional. Now, for the first time, the word love made sense to me —for it was no longer a word with some abstract undefinable meaning.

Grammy, said Justice, when you were little like me and Destiny, what was your favorite thing to do?

Well Justice, my favorite thing was catching fireflies.

Fireflies? What the heck is a firefly? asked Destiny.

They’re a beautiful little insect, said Grammy.

You mean a bug? Ew! Justice exclaimed, as she made a funny scrunched up face.

    Yes Justice, a bug—but, it’s a very special bug.

    Why? asked Justice.

    Why is it special?

Yeah, why is the firebug special? asked Destiny.

Firefly, Destiny. It’s a firefly, not a firebug, and it’s special because each and every firefly has a beautiful light that twinkles in the warm night sky. You can only see them at night, during the summer.

A bug, that lights up! Grammy, you’re so silly! exclaimed Destiny.

Honey, there really are fireflies, and their little lights are what gave them their name. ‘Fire’ because their lights shine like little fires and ‘fly’ because they fly through the air. So you see, that’s why they’re called fireflies.

Grammy, please tell us more about you and the firebugs. said Justice.

"Ok, but they’re fireflies, not firebugs. I remember how I couldn’t wait for evening to come. Knowing that as soon as the sun went down and the sky became dark, it would be filled with the twinkling
