Chapter 1: Understanding Emotional Intelligence
While it is rarely discussed as frequently as traditional intelligence, emotional intelligence (EQ) is just as important, if not more so, in the average person’s day to day life. It is responsible for turning thoughts into actions, creating new connections between individuals and generally ensures you make the right decisions when it matters most. Broadly speaking, it can be seen as the ease with which a person can access their emotions to identify, manage, and understand a wide variety of scenarios including those that involve making an empathetic connection to others, lower stress or communicate effectively. It is also a vital part of understanding body language and nonverbal cues which can be useful in both business and social circles.
While generally spoken of as a single concept, emotional intelligence is actually a combination of three separate skills. The first of these is emotional awareness which can be thought of as the ability to understand what other people are feeling. This goes hand in hand with the skill of understanding and managing your own emotions. They both make it possible to nurture the ability to use one's own emotions or the emotions of other for specific goals. While these all might seem like very straightforward skills when written as a list, the fact of the matter is that those with high emotional intelligence across the board are quite rare.
When it comes to self-improvement, there are few things more universally beneficial than taking the time to improve your emotional intelligence. Intelligence will get you an interview, or maybe a first date, emotional intelligence will ensure that everything goes according to plan. If you are unsure what your current level of emotional intelligence, consider how confident you are of your performance in the following areas:
In the workplace: The complex social interactions that the workplace requires can be complicated to see clearly at the best of times and if you have a low emotional intelligence level then you are likely constantly baffled by why those around sometimes walk on egg shells around certain individuals. Improving your emotional intelligence level will instead allow you to excel, motivate others and eventually put you in line for a leadership position. In fact, emotional intelligence is now routinely considered part of the screening process for many management positions.
Your general health: Emotional intelligence allows you to understand your own emotions more thoroughly which in turn makes it easier to manage them effectively. This, in turn, should make it easier for you to manage your stress levels which ultimately leads to a lower risk of cardiovascular disease, infertility, stroke, blood pressure and a general weakening of the immune system. This doesn’t just include your physical health, but also your mental well-being. If left untreated, high stress levels can also lead to anxiety, depression and other potentially serious mental issues. A failure to connect with others can also lead to long term feelings of isolation which can even lead to suicidal thoughts.
Interactions with others: The better you come to understand your emotions the more likely you are to understand what other people are feeling which in turn makes your interpersonal relations proceed much more smoothly. The relationships formed as a result of a high emotional intelligence also allow for more mutually beneficial relationships to form.
Productivity: Emotional intelligence has a high correlation with an individual’s work performance. Research has revealed that emotional intelligence is twice as crucial as technical/cognitive abilities even among professions such as engineering. Emotionally intelligent managers, supervisors, and leaders are way more effective in managing teams, motivating people and negotiating.
They create a more positive atmosphere with happier workers, who are an asset to any organization. Happier workers translate into higher morale, low absenteeism, reduced attrition rate, and higher productivity. This leads to happier customers, more sales and higher profits. Thus emotional intelligence is an invaluable trait when it comes to success in the workplace. Whilst everyone within an organization possesses more or less the same technical competency and educational qualifications, only a few rise up the corporate ladder because of their ability to manage people and their emotions.
An emotionally intelligent leader who understands the true value of identifying and managing emotions can empower his/her subordinates with these skills on a daily basis. Discipline or self-regulation is essential when it comes to keeping your emotions in check, avoiding panic, remaining calm and being an asset to the team. Emotionally intelligent folks have little trouble in recognizing and managing potentially destructive emotions that can create stress and lower productivity. The approach is calmer, more confident and efficient. Rather than experiencing a more touchy view, these folks depend on their ability to possess a more realistic view of themselves and others.
Coping With Life Challenges: Don’t you sometimes look at some people and wonder how they are able to stay afloat through the most challenging situations and emerge even more successful than before? Chances are, these guys score high on emotional intelligence. Emotionally intelligent folks have the ability to calm their body and mind to view things from a clearer and more objective perspective. Their acts are more mindful and less panic struck.
Greater calmness, objectivity and clarity award you more resilience where life’s challenges are concerned. Emotional intelligence equips you with those skills to take on the toughest challenges life throws at you with resilience.
Early days
First discussed academically in the 1960s, the importance of emotional intelligence wasn’t fully grasped until the 1990s thanks to a pair of researchers named Peter Salovery and John Mayer. In their whitepaper titled Emotional Intelligence, they discussed the idea that EQ and IQ were of equal importance with many people finding EQ more useful in their day to day lives. More
