    INTRODUCTION

    I remember the day like it was yesterday. It was 2009 and I was at the point where I had spent nearly $30,000 of my savings on Google AdWords and search engine optimisation. I was 12 months into my coaching businesses and not getting any results. In fact, I was going backwards. I’d been working with a so-called expert – someone who I really trusted. Someone who I thought knew what they were doing.

    When we met, this person came across as a bit of a know-all. But I believed they were trying to help me. I naively trusted this person, thinking, Well, they’re in business – they must be able to be able to help me.

    This was far from reality. Things deteriorated very quickly.

    I had no money left. I was trying to work out a way I could stay in business. I didn’t want to go back to a job. I had done a marketing degree almost 20 years prior; however, internet marketing skills weren’t taught in universities back then. In fact, I remember the day the internet was installed at my university! That’s how long ago that was. Since then, the impact of the internet on growing businesses has been extraordinary.

    With no money, I needed to work out exactly how I was going to grow my business. So I started with LinkedIn. LinkedIn was an online networking tool I understood, as I’d been using it in my coaching business to help people get their next job. I realised that the skills I had learnt through LinkedIn could help me grow my business and access potential buyers in the corporate world.

    Through LinkedIn, I gradually rebuilt. I tried and tested as many free online tools as I could. I began to realise that there was so much potential for emerging businesses in this new digital world. Social media, newsletters, e-communications – none of these things cost money, yet they were so powerful.

    Today, I work with people who are experts in their fields; whether they’re just stepping out of the corporate world and getting started on their own, or seasoned entrepreneurs who need new and innovative ways to remain relevant to their markets.
