There is something strange and unique about writing. Something I can never quite understand or interpret. Someone once asked me if I meant any of what I wrote, if it based on life experience, if the stories I tell if my characters are real. To me they are, each story, each person, they are real in my writer’s mind and converse and argue with me daily on what is to happen to their lives. Reality is the bucket of cold water which is where no one knows my characters like I do, no one understands. Writers are forever alone; I have found out. For me the smiles and metaphors are ways of remembering, tormenting us almost with their unique life that needs to be written. What we write, we feel. We live, we experience. It’s a parallel world to ours, always. The other side of the mirror. What I write is real to me as my reflection. But then, crazy people see all sorts of things, don’t they? This book represents some of the tears I couldn’t cry, some of the terror behind my smiling eyes. This book exists because one night I told myself that I had to swallow up all the fear and pain around me, and once it was inside me I had to transform it all into something beautiful.

    My Soul to Take

    Prologue

A scream erupted from my sleeping form on the bed of our abandoned home, every night it would be the same dream. Off all the things she could dream about it’s that stupid dream when she was younger and afraid of the thunder storms.

"Violet you need to sleep, my mother said as I sat on her bed to scared to go to bed, afraid the thunder storm would hit my room. Mommy can’t I stay with you a little while longer and then you can tell me the story again from where we come from, I smiled at her and she pulled me close, my head resting on her lap while she stoked my long violet coloured hair. Fine sweetie but right after you must go to bed, you have school tomorrow." I nodded and instantly felt the warmth radiate from her.

"Legend has it that the Deities were tired of the war between the Lore and humankind. They wanted peace between everyone and decided that they will send in their best weapon to ones again restore peace to the world. The Werewolf’s, Vampires, Pixies, and the Valkyrie were at war with humans. Exterminating them like bugs. Not one of them knew of our existence accept the Deities. They got bored easily and thought it fun for us to entertain them. Humans described us as Angels and the name kind of stayed with us, we were created to calm or destroy. We have the power to persuade people and creatures alike to do good or bad, others call it compulsion. We are fierce warriors with these big weapons" she indicated with her hands making me giggle.

"While the war went on for many years and finally after much loss, pain and suffering the war was over, but the Deities had other plans, we wanted to go home but they thought it best we stay on earth to keep an eye on thing to make sure not another war was unleashed on the world. The Angels were furious and retaliated against the Deities. Back then we didn’t have wings like we do now, for our punishment they gave us wings. Aside from the wings they gave us two different souls, one good and the other bad. As soon as we reached the age of twenty-one our sides will cause havoc on our bodies. Only the strongest side will over power the other and win, that is where Angels and Demons come from."

"They thought it funny, instead of floating like we used to, they made us fly. But as time went on the Angels got used to the wings especially once we became one with our soul the wings would change to the colour of your soul. Bright colours for the Angels black and red for the Demon souls, our eyes would change to the colour of our wings when we shifted but those who were lost in hate and despair of their souls their eyes stayed red. After many unsuccessful trails, we could not get them to be the Angels they once were before we came to this forsaken place. And as any living thing on earth we got lonely and begged the Deities to help us, they gave us our Soul mates. The males loved the idea of having a woman as a companion, but we wanted to go home. Once the Deities made the decision all hell broke loose between the genders. Females started experiencing emotions like love and jealousy, hatred, and compassion. There were more males than females and thus the Deities gave us two mates, after your first shift into your soul your true mate would be reviled to you by your soul. And thus, is how your farther and I came to be. But the Deities never intended for us to repopulate, they wanted to stop the birthing process. We begged them to let us keep the gift of life, and they agreed, but we could only bear one child per couple. We accepted the circumstances and left it there; very happy to at least have one offspring."

I snuggled closer to my mother as she continued with the story, no longer listening, but as soon as sleep overtook me she picked me up and carried me to my room. I was half asleep half awake. Mommy why did you have me then if you were only allowed to have one child? My mother stoked my hair; she had a sad expression in her eyes. When she looked back down on me she smiled. I think the Deities felt sorry for me and they gave me you. Neither I nor your farther could understand why you were given to us, but in the end, it didn’t matter. You were our little miracle. She pulled me into her arms and I inhaled her soft scent of wild flowers; it always had a way of calming me.

"Mommy way did you name me Violet" I asked.

She scrunched her nose and smiled at me. When you were born, your eyes and hair were the darkest of Violet we have ever seen, the doctor in the hospital thought there was something wrong with you, stupid human thinking you were going to die, but as soon as he left to go get someone else to come and look at you, you’re farther and I left with you. She poked me in my side and I giggled, we couldn’t name you purple, what would the people think. She laughed, and I fell asleep with my mother singing softly.

That dream haunted her every single night, how could life be so cruel. I got up and went to the bathroom, getting into the shower and washing my hair all my build up stress washed of off my body. Ten years was a long time living in the past, but what could I do. I had no one; my parents were killed right in front of me right after my ninth birthday. I pushed the memory away and got out of the shower.

The girl looking back at me looked like a sixteen-year-old girl, but because of our stupid genes at the age of nineteen I still had to attend school. I would only reach maturity at the age of twenty-one and stop ageing. She pulled a brush through her white hair; it turned from its violet colour too white just after the murder of her parents. I reached for my contact lenses and placed it on my violet eyes. For some reason my eyes stayed the same. I sighed as I pulled on a pair of skinny jeans and a strapless yellow top. Another day of teasing and bulling didn’t these humans have anything better to do with their time. I wasn’t bad looking, long legs, fair complexion, and a pretty face. Being an Angel, we were made to be beautiful some would say we were perfect, but for some reason I couldn’t see myself as anything but okay looking.

There was a knock on the door and I instantly smiled when Nova’s smell filled the air. Nova was by human age twenty-five, but she looked about my age. She shifted and found her mate Hayden. The council technically forced us to attend school those that was left of the Angels. The wolves were killing us, and they were killing us fast. The council thought it best because they will never strike in front of the humans in a public place.

Nova practically dragged me towards the car not to be late for school. Our parents messed up with our names. Nova’s appearance suited her. She had hair like fire and startling sky-blue eyes, but those eyes would look like a storm with dark clouds if she was pissed. Pale complexion and like me very tall. Her wings and eyes turned the colour of the sunset, Orange with light contrasts of yellow and purple. I was the youngest of all the Angels being born out of accident. My parent had a son before me, but he died before he reached the age of three. My parents thought they will never have another off spring, but the Deities favoured them. Ten years after my brother’s death I was born.

The school came into view and I slid lower into my seat. I hated this place; the people were mean and disgusting. I hated the council for putting me through this again. Hayden was walking towards the car as we pulled into the parking space reserved for us. Hayden helped Nova out of the car and hand in hand they walked to the front of this prison. I looked up into the blue sky and the energy from the sun radiated through my body. It has been weeks since I basked in the rays of the Sun. Being Angels we don’t energise like humans, we don’t eat. We get our energy from the sun and nature that is way we are living in the woods. We absorb our power from nature the Deities have forsaken us to this endless life, an evil grin forms in my mind and I flip the Deities in my mind.

    Violet have you met someone?

I turn towards Nova and tilt my head.

    No why?

Because a girl only smiles like that if she met someone.

No, I haven’t met anyone, you know that is impossible.

So why the big bright smile?

I was just thinking of strawberries.

The laughter from her sounded like the sweet sound of bells ringing. Nothing about us was unperfected we were made of perfection. Our voices, hair, eyes, body and skin, every part of us perfection, to draw people to us.

I hated my life and once again I looked up at the sky and swore at the Deities. I was truly lonely; I had no parents and no mate. I used to life with Nova and her parents after my parents were killed, but when I turned seventeen I moved back to our house. Somehow, I felt closer to my mother. We didn’t grieve like humans, but never do we fill the deep void inside of us with food. But I was walking home one afternoon and stumbled upon a strawberry bush. I picked one and placed it ever so carefully into my mouth and the flavours exploded in my mouth. The sweetest taste in my life, for some reason I couldn’t stop eating. Since then when I needed comfort I would run to that bush and eat the sweet delectable heart shaped fruit. I opened my locker to take out the books I would need for the first few periods, and suddenly I was shoved hard against the locker.

I recognised the smell of the human and pushed him away from me. So Violet, Cole said as I turned to face him, didn’t anyone tell you that there is a thing called diet, those jeans make you look even fatter than you already are. I pushed him away and a sudden force of energy moved from my body into his, why can’t you just leave me alone. He shook his head and lifted his hands to look at it. He looked so unsure of himself and I placed my hand on his shoulder. Maybe if you were nicer to other people once in a while you would have more friends. He shook his head again and looked at me, why not Violet I never had a friend before. He smiled and took my hand in his and brought it up to his lips and kissed my hand. I’m sorry for teasing you; I promise it won’t happen again. And with that he left me with my hand still in the air.

What the hell just happened between the two of you? Nova asked in complete horror. Before I could respond I was suddenly pulled out from the school halls to the car.

We need to get to the council.

Hayden was dragging me across the lawn I could barely hold on to him.

    Hayden, would you please stop.

He only kept walking and as we neared the car his blue wings came from his shirt and he picked me up and we flew away from school. I looked at his blue eyes and tried to pull away.

    Hayden what is going on?

    Please put me down.

He looked at me and we drifted down towards the woods. He placed me down gently on my feet and paced in front of me. He suddenly stopped and turned to me, Violet what did you do to that boy?

I didn’t do anything, I just told him to leave me alone.

    Did you touch him?

    His voice sounded rough.

I placed my hand on his shoulder, it’s not like we haven’t touched a human before.

I know that, little one. All I want to know is what you did to him?

I didn’t do anything, I just asked him to leave me alone and make some friends.

    And what did he say.

Well for ones he agreed with me. Usually he is mean and tortures me during the day, this is just as weird for me as it is for you.

Fuck this can’t be happening, we need to go, before I could protest we were back up in the air.

I sat outside Shaun’s office; he was the eldest and head of council. I could hear them inside talking and some nasty words were thrown back and forth. I jumped out of my seat when the door suddenly opened, and Shaun came to stand in front of me. Hayden stepped out of the office looking at me in shock. He cleared his throat and Shaun looked back at him, do you still need me, or can I go back to Nova?

Hayden was second in command if Shaun wasn’t available him being the second eldest of us their parents were Deities and were not here on earth with the rest of us. Shaun nodded and ushered me into his office. I took a seat intertwining my fingers out of nervousness. He took a seat across from me crossing his legs and looking at me intensively.

So, Violet what happened at school this morning?

I lowered my head and told him precisely what happened; I paused for a moment and remembered the force coming from deep down inside.

    I looked up at him.

There was something weird before I touched him.

He leaned in closer and I looked back at the ground I didn’t mention it to Hayden, it didn’t seem that important.

There was something coming from my body, I think it moved into his, it caught me off guard, it never happened before.

The sudden movement as he got out of his chair startled me and I moved away from him.

He took one giant step and he was in front of me placing his hand on my arm. The warmth radiating from him run up my arm and I moved back away from him. I never allowed anyone to touch me, because I could feel their warmth and their Soul reaching for me. He pulled me into his arms, and with the speed of light we were at my house. He pulled me into the house up the stairs to my room, without a word he started packing my clothes in a suitcase. He moved so fast that I could barely keep track of his movements. Suddenly he stopped in front of me and looked pained.

    Where is the safe Violet?

I lifted my finger to the closet door and he moved back to it. He opened it without the code and took out all the money that my parents left me. He placed it in a separate bag, picking up the suit case he picked me up and when I opened my eyes again we were in my garage. He placed the bag and suit case in the trunk of my car. He looked so sad, like he was losing something. We stood there in silence; before I could react, he pulled me into his embrace and inhaled the scent of my hair.

I’m sorry for all this Violet.

He pushed me away and opened the door; get into the car violet, his command forcing me to comply. He closed the door and I opened the window.

    Shaun what is going on?

He looked at the open garage door and then back to me.

You should leave and never come back. You are not safe, none of us are safe, and the rest of us would never be able to protect you.

He gave me a piece of paper and looked back at the road.

That is an address of a safe house the council owns, you are to stay there until one of us comes to get you, it that clear?

I nodded, and he left without another word. His golden wings came into sight and he left never looking back. I started the car and left for the address on the paper. What have I done as tears fell on the paper making the ink smudge turning into something I could not make out? But we had very good memory and I left the place I once called home.

Shaun stood near the trees as the car moved further away from him. The fact that she may very well be the prophesy child made him afraid, not only for her safety, but the rest of the remaining Angels. The rest of the council suspected that the prophesy was the main reason the wolfs were killing them. The Deities send us here to keep
