Introduction
Have you ever wondered how different your life would be if you were more socially confident or charismatic?
From early on in our lives, a lot of emphasis has been put in academic ability and its relation to our success or lack of it. While academic ability can be important, it is now believed that in reality it is our ability to adapt to our social environment the better predictor of our future success in several areas of our lives, even more so than anything we learn in school. It’s not that difficult to see why: humans are social beings that love to be surrounded by friends and share experiences and knowledge with others. We are constantly leaking emotions to each other. We unconsciously mirror other’s movements when we feel sympathy or agreement. We simply need to take a look at the prominence (and dominance) of social media in our society to understand how strong and innate our desire for social belonging, and the exchange of ideas and experiences really is.
It’s common to think that social skills are only useful for making friends, but in reality, they affect our ability to function properly in our day to day lives. Social skills are the tools we use to communicate, learn, ask questions to others, make new friends, ask for help and develop and sustain healthy relationships. These tools help people interact appropriately with others throughout all of their life stages. This state of human communion is something that most of us desire to achieve and it’s a huge mistake to think that we’d prefer the solitary life that is often imposed on us in modern life.
It may seem that some people are simply born charismatic, likeable, and with a great set of social skills, but most are capable of developing these attributes. Regardless of your personality, there are certain things you can practice in your day to day life to modify your behaviour and make you seem more trustworthy, influential and charming in your social interactions.
We now know that there is a direct relationship between poor social skills and feelings of stress and loneliness. Both of which can severely impact our mental and physical health. For a long time we have been aware that social skills are closely related to depression and anxiety,
